I used to sit in my boarding school dorm room and dream of this scene. The freedom of having a kitchen to cook in, a car to drive myself to the grocery store, a bank account to buy the groceries. Making my own meal was so out of reach. I dreamed and dreamed of this table. This dish-ware. This meal. This life.

I think of her often, bouncing rock hard avocados off the cafeteria floor, surviving off of microwave mac and cheese and raisin bran. I wish I could show her the now, the now she always wanted and couldn’t see the finish line of.

This is a home I’ve built, a conversation with food I longed for, a gift of feeling nourished, proof of patience, proof of gratitude. Thank you for all the work you’ve done to get us here. Without a then, there would be no now. by @hannahshea__

I witnessed a truck driver pulled over at a viewpoint in northern Washington. He stood at the cliffs edge beside his rig, holding his phone to the sky, sharing the view with a loved one over FaceTime. I think of him often. I wonder where he came from, and how many mile markers he passed to arrive here. I’ll remember it. The tenderness. Taking a moment for himself, on a journey for someone else. by @hannahshea__
