Back in 2019, the inspiring filmmaker @dawnporter gave me the honor of a lifetime: working on my incredible congressman’s documentary, “John Lewis: Good Trouble”. (Shoutout to @brandydaustin for hiring me 🫶🏽).

Assisting the interview of @staceyabrams in Congressman Lewis’ office was a privilege. We celebrated his legacy before he left this world.

I remembered meeting Rep. Lewis as a fourth grader in an art competition he hosted. Was reintroduced to him by former Rep. Marjorie Margolies at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Then, being able to see someone, a fellow Georgian, like Stacey, speak on his impact and carry on his legacy: It was a full-circle moment.

In 2020, I had the privilege of working with Stacey and her team to get out the vote. My boss Ms. Winfrey knew we were at a tipping point. We worked with Stacey and her nonprofits to get Black women to the polls. Collectively, we knew the importance of doing work on the ground, especially in Georgia.

OWN Your Vote was a national-level social campaign, with several televised spotlights featuring Stacey, other activists, and elected officials. We activated OWN talent for town halls, lives, press, and in person events. We amplified efforts of local grassroots organizations. We won awards for our campaign. But more importantly, Black women had one of the highest turnout rates in history. And we wouldn’t have been able to do it without Stacey or the work she led.

Now, I’m helping another incredible leader, @amandajhollowell_ , run for Congress in Georgia’s First Congressional District. Someone I wouldn’t have met if I hadn’t worked on OWN Your Vote, as we also worked with Mrs. Obama’s When We All Vote team, and which later included Amanda.

All of my effort has been focused on @amanda4ga lately. But when Stacey forces you to take another photo, and Amanda offers to capture it, you accept the offer and have a moment for yourself. I have been so lucky to work with many intentional, forward-thinking women throughout my career. The power in protecting our democracy and fighting for fair representation makes it that much sweeter. taken in Midway, Georgia by @hannahvega
