I had to say goodbye to my cat Chive last month.

Chive was with me for 16 years. He was 16. I was 16 when we met.

Chive came with me from the small barn in my hometown where he was born (shout out to @laurencaldwellcromer for blessing me with him), to New York, to LA, back to NJ and New York, and back to LA again. In total, we moved places together over 20 (!!) times. Poor guy!!! And this doesn’t even include the stints he spent with @goat_blogger_international_fr and @gnosiszoey. But he was a trooper. We flew, drove across the country, and then flew again.

Chive wasn’t always the easiest cat. He pissed on my bed more times that I can count (sorry @michaelgarciaotavo, @gnosiszoey, and @melanie1377). He threw up all over the place constantly (and we could never really figure out why). He was testy, and a lot of people, to be honest, didn’t like him very much, lol…

But I loved him. I loved him more than I knew was possible.

Chive showed me what it is to feel unconditional love. He made me believe that even if others may perceive you as difficult, even if there are things about you that some may find off-putting, there are those out there that will love you unconditionally, as I unconditionally loved Chive.

It’s a funny thing when a companion animal is with you almost every day for 16 years as you grow from a kid into an adult. Chive was the most consistent family I had, proximity-wise, for half of my life. In a lot of ways, Chive’s passing marks the end of a certain version of me.

As I sit here writing this caption, I have started to sob. I have admittedly always been one to repress my emotions. But with Chive’s passing, I haven’t been able to do so. And while I don’t love the feeling of being upset, I don’t ever want to stop feeling sad that he is gone. Because he was special, and things will always be just a little more sad without him.

Animals are so special, and to me, Chive was the most special of them all.
