This weekend, we're celebrating 25 years of artist studios at Hanson Street in Glasgow!

The creative community at the building – spanning several generations and countless disciplines – are coming together to host an open studios event on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October (11am–4pm), giving visitors the rare opportunity to see inside their private workspaces.

They are also staging an exhibition showcase in the ground floor Project Space, which will capture the variety of media being practiced at Hanson Street.

Tasse @tasse_coffee_ will be set up to serve you delicious hot drinks and matchas on both days as well!

Hanson Street is a former cigarette factory in Dennistoun. The building was officially transformed by Wasps in 2001 to create 77 affordable artist studios, which today serve around 150 artists and makers, including the Glasgow Ceramics Studio and Glasgow Glass Studio.

Celebrate the occasion with the incredible painters, glass makers, jewellers, printmakers, ceramicists, sculptors and more this weekend by stopping by to explore. Free entry and all welcome.

The bench space pictured will be available to rent in my shared jewellery/metalwork studio from November. If you are interested please DM for more details.

The space is ideal for recent graduates: with access to communal tools, there is opportunity to test out ideas and establish a professional practice before having to invest in major tools and equipment.

The studio is located within the Hanson Street Wasps studios in Glasgow, UK taken in Wasps Artists' Studios - Hanson Street, Glasgow by @hansonstreetstudios

Finding a space to practice metalwork crafts can be a challenge. I will share more about all the amazing people who have been through the creative doors of my @waspsstudios workshop over the last decade, hopefully emphasising how important affordable studio space is for artists/designers/makers.

Come and celebrate the @hansonstreetstudios at the upcoming Open Studios- details below.

This year marks 25 years of Wasps artist studios at Hanson Street! We are looking forward to marking the occasion this October with a special open studios weekend and group exhibition, which will showcase the breadth of talent and creativity based there.

Included in the line-up will be painters, printmakers, ceramicists, designers, metalworkers, jewellers and more, with some being based at the building for decades.

Writing is an important part of my practice, both its physicality which help organise thought processes - I use a dip pen to slow me down, and as content in my work, where it forms its own rhythm and becomes illegible, embedding itself into the cloth.

I’m really pleased to be taking part in London Textile Month with @selvedgemagazine when I’ll be giving an online talk about all aspects of my printed textile practice - ‘From Essence to Substance - Creating Depth in Print’, and the long, slow process of making work. I’ll also be giving a virtual tour of my studio and doing some screen-printing; I do hope you can join me!

✨ EXHIBITION AT THE BRIGGAIT ✨

We’re delighted to be hosting Scottish Glass Society’s “Art on The A-Frame – Commonwealth” at The Briggait this week!

As one of our tenants at Hanson Street, Scottish Glass Society members have brought together a beautiful collection of stained, copper foiled, mosaic and fused glass artworks, inspired by Glasgow, the Commonwealth and everything from the city’s iconic architecture and cultural history to nature, emblems and sport.

📍 The Briggait
114 Bridgegate, Glasgow G1 5HZ

📅 10–17 August 2026
⏰ 11am–4pm daily

There will also be live stained glass demonstrations taking place on:

🔨 Saturday 15 & Sunday 16 August
⏰ 12 noon–4pm

Stained glass is now recognised as a heritage craft at risk, so this exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the craft, see artists at work and discover how traditional glassmaking continues to have a place in contemporary life.

Pop into The Briggait, take a look at the exhibition and see the glassmaking demonstrations for yourself! taken in The Briggait by @hansonstreetstudios

Screen-printing is often perceived as a quick process due to its capacity to replicate an image multiple times - but this is not what attracted me to the medium.

My work is all about layers - I think, feel, see and print in layers - which is why screen-printing suits me perfectly. I go about things the long way round…. Weeks before I even pick up a screen, I am going through a whole range of other processes, many of which a viewer would be unaware of. And when I do pull the ink through the mesh, that’s just the beginning as many layers will be built up and stripped away with subtle shifts and changes occurring each time. So it’s a very flexible medium, but on cloth there are also plenty of pitfalls!

I’ll be talking through this stage-by-stage way of working and how it informs the outcome of my textiles in my online talk on 9th September for @selvedgemagazine as part of London Textile Month.

Here are two pieces shown at the Danish Cultural Institute in Edinburgh some years ago. Working on a heavy wool flannel requires many more pulls of the ink than when printing on linen. The beauty of dyeing wool is that is frequently ‘exhausts’ the dye bath, leaving completely clear water at the end of the process.

‘Lost and Found’ (now in a private collection) and ‘Hidden Truths’, both 134cm wide x 200cm high.

I’ll be talking more about working on different substrates in an online talk from my Glasgow studio with @selvedgemagazine as part of London Textile Month on 9th September.

Alongside my printed textile practice I assist other artists and designers on projects. I recently worked with Costume Designer Zephyr Liddell @zephyrliddell on a huge dyeing job for Thrice by @alseedproductions. Thrice is currently in production week, and premieres on 16th of October at Tramway, Glasgow.

Matching very subtle colours involves lots of meticulous sampling. Dyes are weighed to a hundredth of a gram and it’s a maths workout devising and adjusting recipes!

Dyeing is an important part of my process and I’ll be covering this in an online talk from my Glasgow studio with @selvedgemagazine as part of London Textile Month on 9th September.

It was great to meet Paul from @PalFoxPhoto last month when he visited me at @WaspsStudios Hanson Street to take these fab pictures 📷

My studio has always been more like an office than anything else, going back to my very first one in Glasgow in the Barnes Building at @GlasgowSchoolArt from 2008-2010. I bought ‘The Boss’ mug back then as I was interested in the aesthetics of the corporate world and exploring what it meant to be self-employed worker, making pieces like ‘The History of Financial Crises’ (2009), ‘Desk Chair Parade’ (2009) and ‘Desk Chair Disco’ (2011), and the ‘Work-a-thon for the Self-Employed’ (2011).

I’m not making much art these days as nearly all my time goes into local community activism, particularly with the @GlasgowCommunity Energy co-operative which I helped get up-and-running during the pandemic, and with the @GetGlasgowMoving public transport campaign which I co-founded in 2016.

Over the summer I’m preparing for Get Glasgow Moving’s 10th Anniversary Exhibition at the @NewGlasgowSociety, which opens on Thurs 17 September as part of @GlasgowDODF 2026.

I love using my creative skills to further causes that I’m passionate about. Over the years I've designed many campaign materials – including this ‘Trans-Clyde Links You Clyde-Wide’ T-Shirt, which is based on the original marketing for the Trans-Clyde integrated public transport network launched by the Greater Glasgow Passenger Transport Executive in 1979, the year that I was born.

The integrated public transport networks which most big city-regions had were wilfully destroyed in 1986 with the deregulation (and later privatisation) of buses. This was one of the most destructive of all Margaret Thatcher’s policies, and it is shameful that the @ScotGov has continued to maintain it for more than quarter of a century of devolution. With the @BetterBusesSPT campaign, we are doing all we can to get our region’s buses back in public control.

If you like the T-Shirt, come down to the exhibition in September and you’ll be able to get one there! And, if you'd like to have a nosey round my studio, I'm also planning to take part in the @HansonStreetStudios Open Studios on Sat 3 October 😊 Portrait of artist Ellie Harrison in her studio at Wasps Hanson Street in Glasgow taken in Wasps Artists Studios by @hansonstreetstudios
