Indicators of Environmental Health

Scientists use grasshoppers as bioindicators. Because they are highly sensitive to changes in their environment, a sudden drop or shift in the grasshopper population can warn researchers about:

The heavy use of harmful chemical pesticides.

Sudden changes in local weather patterns or climate change.

The loss of native plant biodiversity by @hanspeter1965_

Brissago is a picturesque Swiss village in the canton of Ticino, located right on the Italian border on the western shore of Lake Maggiore. Situated at the lowest point in Switzerland (around 193 meters above sea level), the village is sheltered by steep mountains. This unique position creates an exceptional, nearly subtropical climate, giving the area a Mediterranean feel with palms, lemon trees, and cypresses.
Top Attractions

The Brissago Islands (Isole di Brissago): The region's most famous attraction is a pair of islands in the lake. While the smaller island (Isola Piccola) is kept wild, the larger one (Isola Grande) hosts Switzerland's only island botanical garden. Established in 1885 by the Russian Baroness Antoinette de Saint Léger, it showcases over 2,000 subtropical plant species thriving in the mild climate. It features the neoclassical Villa Emden, which stands at the heart of the park. by @hanspeter1965_

Flamingos (family Phoenicopteridae) are iconic, highly social wading birds known worldwide for their vibrant pink plumage, stilt-like legs, and distinct, downward-curved bills. There are six recognized species of flamingos, found across parts of the Americas, Africa, Asia, and southern Europe.

Flamingos are not born pink—chicks hatch with fluffy gray feathers. Their famous coloration comes entirely from their diet, which is rich in carotenoid pigments. Flamingos consume large amounts of brine shrimp, algae, and small mollusks that contain these pigments. An enzyme in their liver breaks down the carotenoids into pink and orange molecules that deposit into their growing feathers and skin. If they stop eating these foods, their feathers eventually fade to white. by @hanspeter1965_

Cornflower

Symbolism: It is the national flower of Estonia and Germany. Historically, young men wore it in their buttonholes to signify they were unmarried and available, giving it the nickname "bachelor's button." [1]

Culinary & Cosmetics: The edible petals add a pop of color to salads and herbal tea blends (like Lady Grey). Its extracts are common in skincare to soothe sensitive skin around the eyes.

Escape into nature

Sometimes, the best way to move forward is to completely step away. Spending time in nature is not just about changing your surroundings; it is about awakening your senses and finding a deeper, more peaceful connection to yourself and the world around you.
