“Ilona, How was the Kentucky Derby?”, was the most asked question that I heard this week.

It was my first time at the Kentucky Derby and it was absolutely amazing! However, I won’t lie- if not the people who invited us, the experience might be very different.

Every detail of our trip was highly pre-planned: accommodation, air and ground transportation, the suite at Churchill Downs, every night reservations, and time with celebrities. I can’t thank enough to our friends.

Some tips for you if you want to go to the Kentucky Derby (KD):
* Plan early. KD is a big event that attracts around 157k people to Churchill Downs. It means, that hotels will be sold out, finding parking will be impossible, and prices will be high.

* Find transportation. I wouldn’t suggest driving to Churchill Downs. The traffic was horrible keeping people still for hours. Although we had a police escort, it usually took us 20-30 minutes to just get out from Churchill Downs territory. Many people walked on foot, and it probably was the fastest option. Hint: finding accommodation by Churchill Downs would help.
* Hat and apparel. Don’t sweat if you can’t find a perfect hat. Louisville had several hat stores working 8:30 AM-9 PM selling the most fashionable hats for every price range. Also, don’t worry if you can’t find a perfect dress or suit for KD. Honestly, there were so many creative and fashionable people out there that I felt being invisible with my “modest outfits”😅 The best colors to choose: pink, blush, violet, any pastel, red, yellow, green, and anything floral.

* Choose footwear wisely. I highly suggest not wearing high heels unless it’s chunky heels with the platform or have an extra pair to change. You will walk so much for so long that all your thoughts will be just about your feet and finding a comfortable seat.

* Make dinner reservations earlier. Some people plan the KD trips a year in advance, so the restaurants can be fully booked. My couple of favorite spots: @jeffrubyslouisville @proofonmain

* Have fun! Talk to people, take pictures, watch races, maybe even bet on horses- just have fun!

The Cornell allegations have had me thinking about something bigger.
Women grow up learning how to protect themselves: watch your drink, stay with your friends, share your location, don’t walk alone.

But prevention cannot only be a lesson for girls.

We need to raise boys who understand consent, who speak up, who step in, and who are willing to make the room uncomfortable when something is wrong.

I’m raising a son. And I don’t just want him to be a man who would never hurt a woman.

I want him to be the man who makes another man stop.

That kind of man matters.

1. Have money that is YOURS. 💸
Even in a happy marriage or relationship, know your finances, have savings, understand your accounts and be able to take care of yourself.

2. Take the trip. ✈️
Stop waiting for the perfect time, perfect person or perfect group. Some experiences have an expiration date called energy.

3. Take care of your body BEFORE it demands your attention. ❤️
Move. Get your checkups. Sleep. Eat well most of the time. Strength matters more with every decade.

4. Have a life outside of your relationship and children.
Friends. Interests. Work. Hobbies. Dreams. Something that belongs to you.

5. Own something you once thought was “too nice” for you. ✨
The bag. The jewelry. The beautiful sheets. The art. Whatever YOUR version is. Stop saving everything good for someday.

6. Get comfortable disappointing people.
You can be kind and still say no. You don’t need a three-paragraph explanation every time you choose yourself.

7. Start something you might completely suck at. 😂
A business. Tennis. Painting. Dancing. A new career. Learning a language. Whatever. Being 40+ doesn’t mean you should only do things you’re already good at.
