A production fundamental! Compression reduces the dynamic range of an audio signal by turning down the louder parts, making the overall level more consistent. It’s essential because it helps control peaks, make sounds sit more evenly in a mix, and can add punch, sustain and character when used deliberately.

Modes can give your music a more specific flavour than when using major or minor scales. There’s a bunch of different modes but here’s a couple to get you started.

EDIT: I didn’t display the midi notes for the middle two scales, you can hear them, but I showed the midi for the major one three times. Oopsie 😂

I’ve realised that having more plugins doesn’t necessarily give you more options and sometimes it just gives you more decisions to make.

There’s nothing wrong with buying plugins, but I think it’s worth being a bit more deliberate about what you actually add to your collection.

I’ve found that the plugins I get the most value from tend to be the ones I know inside out and can use across loads of situations. ShaperBox 3 and Serum 2 are good examples for me. I’m familiar with them, they cover a lot of ground, and I can get to the result I want without stopping to figure out how another plugin works. Both of these offer a lot of the options that I would want such a plug-in for and through using them so much it sped up the process.

I’ve also started paying more attention to what plugins are actually capable of before buying something new. Sometimes you’ll find a cheaper alternative that covers the same job, or discover a feature in something you already own that you weren’t aware of. This is especially true for DAW‘s and reinforces my decision to choose Ableton. There’s a bunch of other considerations in regards to a DAW decision as each of them have their own strengths which is something I might talk about later.

I think it’s less about having the biggest plugin folder and more about getting the most out of what’s in it.
