Takeshi Obata’s art style gave Death Note a visual identity that felt equally elegant, gothic, and unsettling. His color illustrations rarely look like ordinary promotional art. Light, L, and Misa are posed like fashion models, saints, or doomed figures in a religious painting, surrounded by crosses, skulls, feathers, chains, apples, and grotesque Shinigami. The symbolism often mirrors the characters themselves. Light is presented with angelic beauty and divine authority, even as the imagery around him quietly reveals his corruption. L is usually placed in darker, emptier compositions, while Ryuk’s monstrous design disrupts the polished beauty of the human world. Obata also uses color to heighten that contrast. Rich reds and golds suggest power, temptation, and blood, while black and white create the feeling of judgment, purity, and death. The result is artwork that can appear heavenly and horrifying at the same time. Many of these illustrations were collected in “blanc et noir: Takeshi Obata Illustrations”, an oversized 132-page art book containing his work from 2001 to 2006. Alongside Death Note, it features artwork from Hikaru no Go, massive foldout pieces, special papers, three double-sided posters, and 12 pages of Obata’s commentary, including a section on his drawing process. by @hardanimemoments

This and Levi fleeing from Kenny’s men are probably the best animated sequences in the show... WIT Studio absolutely cooked Anime: Attack on Titan (2013) In Episode 11, Eren and Mikasa race through Trost using their ODM gear as part of humanity’s plan to reclaim the district. Their mission is to reach an enormous boulder so Eren can transform, carry it and seal the gate breached by the Titans. The entire flight unfolds through an ambitious 18-second cut that seamlessly switches between Eren and Mikasa, moves into first-person perspective and blends the hand-drawn characters with 3D environments. The sequence ends with Eren biting his hand and transforming in midair. WIT Studio staff later called it the “legendary 18 seconds.” The work of action animation director Yasuyuki Ebara reportedly inspired the other animators to push their own ODM gear sequences even further, helping establish the fast and cinematic aerial action that defined the anime’s early seasons. Based on Hajime Isayama’s manga, ‘Attack on Titan’ follows the remnants of humanity living behind enormous walls as Eren and his friends join the military to fight the man-eating Titans threatening their world. #attackontitan #shingekinokyojin #animefights #animescenes #anime by @hardanimemoments

Mifune has one of the coolest sword styles in anime 🔥 Anime: Soul Eater (2008) During his final showdown with Black☆Star, Mifune unleashes the Infinite One-Sword Style by throwing dozens of katanas into the air and surrounding the battlefield with them. Even the “KEEP OUT” tape wrapped around the area becomes part of the technique. Despite its name, Mifune generally fights with one sword at a time, abandoning each blade and immediately grabbing another from the ground. Known as the “God of the Sword,” he is an ordinary human whose soul possesses the strength of 99 normal human souls. Soul Eater follows students at the Death Weapon Meister Academy, where human meisters fight alongside partners capable of transforming into weapons. The nostalgia for this first opening hits different… Anime: Bleach (2004–2026) Bleach premiered on October 5, 2004, opening with “Asterisk” by ORANGE RANGE. Its colorful streetwear, graffiti-inspired visuals and effortlessly cool introduction to Ichigo and the cast immediately established the style that would define the anime. The original series concluded in 2012 after 366 episodes without adapting the manga’s final arc. After a decade away, Bleach returned in 2022 with Thousand-Year Blood War to finally complete Ichigo’s story. Today, the anime reached its conclusion 22 years after that first opening aired. Based on Tite Kubo’s manga, Bleach follows Ichigo Kurosaki, a teenager who can see spirits and unexpectedly inherits the powers of a Soul Reaper. What begins with him protecting his family from Hollows eventually grows into a battle spanning the human world, Soul Society and Hueco Mundo. #bleach #anime #animescenes #animeedits #animelovers by @hardanimemoments
