I planned to wear a gown. Instead, I wore half a century old lace saree passed down through generations.

For the 29th edition of Globoil award’s by Teflas, a last minute fitting issue with a designer gown led me to a 50 year old lace saree, passed down from my grandmother to my mother and after Maa’s passing to me.

Its black had faded into slate grey. But the memories it held were still vividly vibrant.

I could see my Fauji grandmother and my Fauji mother wearing this very saree with their simple pearls. My mother with a little sindoor, her wedding ring, and her arm around her husband, my late father, in his blue patrol uniform.

That image of my late parents is so vividly vibrant in my memory. Even now, I can almost smell my late parents, my father’s Old Spice cologne and my mother’s Estée Lauder perfume. For a moment, they feel close enough to touch.

The last time I wore this saree, I was a twelve year old girl playing dress up in front of a mirror. Today, I wear it as a woman rebuilding her life from scratch, wanting to wrap my mother’s love around me.

Some sarees are passed down. This one held me up.

A beautiful evening celebrating global leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers in the edible oil industry, made deeply personal by the love I wore.

Thank you, Asim from Teflas, for hosting me. Thank you, Aman Mahajan.
