POSTS STORIES REELS
❤️‍🔥 ANNOUNCING ❤️‍🔥 Please join us Monday, November 9, for a FREE screening of Lebanese director Ghassen Salhab’s powerful debut, PHANTOM BEIRUT 🇱🇧 Salhab’s film presents us with Khalil, a Lebanese freedom fighter who faked his death during the Lebanese Civil War & escaped. Ten years later, he has chosen to face the city and community he abandoned. Blurring the lines between fiction & reality and memory & reconstruction, PHANTOM BEIRUT lives up to its name. There is a haunted nature of the Beirut that Khalil returns to, with damages from the civil war apparent everywhere he turns. In our continuing mission to aid those affected by the Gaza genocide, we will be raising funds for @jad_family10 at this screening. While it is free entry, we hope that you’ll be able to contribute to a great cause. Lebanese and Palestinian struggles are deeply intertwined, as both are targets of the Israeli war machine. 100% of our earnings for this evening will be donated. We would like to thank the always wonderful @several_futures for working with us on this screening and making it possible for us to make this a fundraiser. It means the world to us to know like-minded people in the world of independent and international film 🕊️ Full details on hardlight.online, link in our bio 🌐 by @hardlightrichmond
❤️‍🔥 BIG ANNOUNCEMENT ❤️‍🔥 Hello Hard Li(ght)brary Heads! We have BIG news: we will be showing our next series of films on 16mm!!! This has been in the works almost two years, and we are thrilled to be finally realizing this dream with some picks of international classics from four members of our team. Nov. 1st: ROME, OPEN CITY (1945): Roberto Rossellini’s largely non professional cast tell a bold story of antifascist resistance at the close of WWII in this film produced immediately after the Nazi occupation of Italy. Co-written with Federico Fellini and filmed on bombed-out location, ROME, OPEN CITY is considered one of the early, formative works of Italian Neorealism. Dec 6th: DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST (1951): A young and inexperienced priest moves to a rural French town and begins to doubt his faith. Robert Bresson’s signature minimalism is on full display in his earliest acclaimed film. Jan 3rd: WILD STRAWBERRIES (1957): The film that helped cement Ingmar Bergman’s place on the world stage, Wild Strawberries is a surreal, philosophical exploration of existentialism and introspection. Through dreams, nightmares and memories, we follow Isak, a 78-year-old professor, as he confronts his mortality and reflects on a life lived. Feb 7th: WOMAN IN THE DUNES (1964): One of the signature collaborations between Hiroshi Teshigahara and novelist Kobo Abe, Woman in the Dunes blends the boundary-pushing tendencies of the Japanese New Wave with the spiritual and transcendental. In the dunes, eroticism and the mundanity of life intertwine in the original situationship. Come and see one of Andrei Tarkovsky’s all-time favorite films in gritty 16mm and prepare to dream. All screenings are FREE! There is ample free street parking surrounding RPL that is unlimited on weekends. Full details at hardlight.online 🌐 Thank you to all the librarians at RPL Main Branch for working with us to bring 16mm screenings to Richmond. See you there! by @hardlightrichmond
❤️‍🔥 ANNOUNCING: U OF NOIR 🕵️🫆 Prepare to hit the books and return to the classroom for an academic deep dive on the film noir as a genre with our upcoming U OF NOIR series at the University of Richmond! Though there won’t be homework or studying required, the series will track film noir from its very beginnings in the classics before moving to modern iterations with a neonoir, tech noir, and 21st century masterpiece. Following each film, join us for an optional Q&A segment with college faculty and free refreshments as we break down the form and function of film noir tropes and stylistic patterns in the mode. Whether you’re a TCM noir alley enthusiast or someone entirely new to the genre and wanting to learn, the series will have something for everyone, so we encourage you to park at the pines (Ryland Circle) and join us in Jepson Hall, Room 118 for this free series in collaboration with the University of Richmond’s Film Studies Program. Full details on the series and screenings is at our website, hardlight.online 🌐 by @hardlightrichmond
❤️‍🔥 BIG ANNOUNCEMENT ❤️‍🔥 IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY 2️⃣🎂 and we are celebrating on Sunday, 11/15 with a special DOUBLE FEATURE of two of American slow cinema legend Kelly Reichardt’s most celebrated early films, 2008’s WENDY AND LUCY and 2006’s OLD JOY! We’re big fans of Ms. Reichardt here at Team Hard Light, and with these serene features (and especially OLD JOY’S iconic soundtrack by Yo La Tengo), we’re going to celebrating the season in style 🍂 This is our last screening at S23 for the year, so come see it BIG before we’re back next year! ~ 🐶 WENDY AND LUCY (2008) [80 min] A near-penniless drifter’s journey to Alaska in search of work is interrupted when she loses her dog while attempting to shoplift food for it. WENDY AND LUCY addresses issues of sympathy and generosity at the edges of American life, revealing the limits and depths of people’s duty to each other in tough times. ~ 👬 OLD JOY (2006) [74 min] Soon to be a father, Mark feels the pressure of domestic responsibility closing in, so he is more than happy to accept when his old friend Kurt proposes a camping trip in the Oregon wilderness. During their time together, the men come to grips with the changes in their lives and the effect on their relationship. Adapted from a short story by Jon Raymond and accompanied by an atmospheric Yo La Tengo score, OLD JOY is a contemplative, wryly observed triumph whose modest scale belies the richness of its insight. ~ schedule: doors - 6:30pm 🐶 WENDY AND LUCY - 7pm intermission / doors for OLD JOY - 8:30pm 👬 OLD JOY - 8:45pm ~ 🎟️ tix at link in bio 🌐 full info at hardlight.online 🎨 poster by bestie @water.garlic see u there 🫶 by @hardlightrichmond

Laura (1944) was dangerously irresistible tonight. Thank you to @hardlightrichmond and everyone who came. Get ready for Blow Out (1981) next Thursday🎬 by @hardlightrichmond
❤️‍🔥 COMING SOON ❤️‍🔥 Part 4️⃣ of our series U OF NOIR 🕵️🫆 BLOW OUT wears its 70s influences on its sleeves as it balances the grimy streets of a neo-noir, the frantic anxiety of a conspiracy thriller, and the pulpy sensationalism and lighting of an Italian giallo film. De Palma, an all-time image-maker in his creative cinematography and colorful lighting, blends his iconic split diopter shots with incredible sound design to create the ultimate thriller. With a plot echoing the JFK assassination and the Watergate scandal, this film ought not be missed by film fans. Come and hear “a good scream” on the big screen with us October 22 in Jepson Hall, Room 118 at UR! full details at hardlight.online 🌐 by @hardlightrichmond
❤️‍🔥 ANNOUNCING ❤️‍🔥 In recognition of Filipino American Heritage Month, Hard Light is proud to be partnering with @ilysm_books to present Rafael Manuel’s stunning new dark comedy FILIPIÑANA! Isabel, a 17-year-old from the rural north of the Philippines, works at a posh country club outside Manila. Amid stifling heat and pervasive drought, she lines up golf balls for powerful men to drive into the carefully manicured verdant horizon. Between shifts, she wanders the immaculate grounds, sampling its luxuries and exploring its liminal spaces. The club’s members, including an industrialist and his expatriate niece, the president and his pampered wife, and a slew of Chinese tourists, engage in a complex dance with the doting and subservient staff. But something is rotting beneath the pristine fairways of the elite resort, as Isabel discovers when she tries to return a mislaid golf club to its patriarchal director, Dr. Palanca. The deeper she journeys into its most exclusive corners, the closer she gets to the violent truths of the club, her native Philippines, and her own past. 📚 Mariela from ILYSM will have books for sale!! ❤️‍🔥 COMING SOON ❤️‍🔥 Thursday, October 15 at UR’s Jepson Hall, Room 118, we’re excited to be sharing LAURA (1944) as the next installment of our fall series, U OF NOIR 🕵️🫆 Named one of the best mystery films by the AFI, Otto Preminger’s LAURA is probably your favorite director’s favorite noir. The film is full of past and future stars from the era with Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Judith Anderson, and a young Vincent Price, but its most important legacy may reside in its heavy influence on David Lynch’s TV series TWIN PEAKS where multiple plot elements are borrowed from Preminger’s noir classic. With the ghost of Laura looking over the film in a Gothic portrait and a beautiful and memorable classic theme in the score, prepare to be haunted by LAURA. This screening is FREE!! Doors at 6:30, show at 7. Full details at hardlight.online 🌐 see u there detectives! by @hardlightrichmond

🧱 ANNOUNCING 🧱 We are excited to announce we’re bringing John Wilson’s new “rock” doc THE HISTORY OF CONCRETE to @studiotwothree on October 21! Following the finale of his TV series (HOW TO WITH JOHN WILSON), filmmaker John Wilson looks to the bedrock of his beloved New York City for inspiration and structure. Concrete, the world’s most widely used building material, appears as an ever-present life force, and John sets out to make the definitive documentary on the matter. To tell this seemingly drab story, he decides to use the industry-approved Hallmark formula to increase his movie’s appeal. But his foundation soon begins to crumble—literally and figuratively—as he struggles to balance artistic freedom with the realities of the modern film industry. Thank you to our friends at @magnoliapics for helping bring this picture to Richmond 💓 🎟️ tix at link in biooooo ⏰ doors at 6pm, show at 6:30! make note! 🌐 full details (and tix) at hardlight.online by @hardlightrichmond
