@newdaycleveland visited Harkin Studio in the spring. This little story shares the heart behind the brand. Thank you for coming @newdaycleveland! My question for many years has been: is it possible to create new products free from waste, toxic chemicals, or harm to people’s health? It stemmed from the massive role the fashion industry plays in perpetuating harmful practices. The research harkened me back to how things used to be made—raw materials were sourced and fashioned close to home. This is the mission behind each design made at Harkin. It’s a dream come true in this era to get my leather vegetable tanned by @pergamena_ny in New York, traceable to a handful of regenerative farms in the US through @fifth_business_farm. Shown in the video is a new cow hide from @hemlockhillfarmny where I know the cow was raised with care and respect. Leather scraps are either donated, sold, or composted. There are minimal unused materials from each design, making Harkin a low-waste studio. These are the baseline standards. At Harkin, you are connected to your leather piece. Luxury is not mysterious, it’s personal. 🪷 by @harkin.studio

Conditioning your leather is vital for its longevity. This video has all the tips you need for conditioning your Gather No. 4, or any leather bag. Think of leather similar to our own skin. When we’re dehydrated or haven’t used lotion (especially in dry climates), our skin dries out and can even crack. Leather is the same. It’s animal skin afterall! Harkin bags are crafted with vegetable tanned leather and no finish, which means it’s a natural material that patinas over time. Conditioning helps the patina process by building up natural oils to protect it from those inevitable coffee spills from becoming a stain. When you see those vintage bags with cracked and ripped leather, you’re looking at a bag that didn’t get conditioned. Keep your leather bags vibrant and alive by conditioning them. This is how it becomes a wearable heirloom. Get your conditioner of choice (my favorite is @leathermilkofficial No. 3) and follow along 🦢.
