A story of how we take ownership of the poison injected into us by someone else’s trauma and claim it as our own. How we perpetuate the cycle of abuse and inflict it upon others. And how we remove agency from our own suffering and our own crimes, never freeing ourselves or our loved ones from the poison born centuries before us. Our poison that keeps us from trusting and being trusted.

That jolt of love and excitement that you find the first time you really see yourself in reflection. And the fading imprint that image has on shaping who you become.

Writing Rise marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life. When the world began to open up again at the end of the pandemic, I returned to New York City having entered a new territory of understanding and discovery of my identity, but I was still closeted with my family. Rise became my anthem to give me courage that I played repeatedly for the weeks before coming out to my father. This song marks the beginning of motion on this journey; the moment I cared to see myself in public without wearing a mask.

This release is the beginning of something much larger, the first step into a story I’ll be sharing over the next year. These songs and the artwork that share their space foreshadow a narrative that will ultimately culminate in a live show. When engaging with the music over the next six months, I urge you to reflect upon the images and lyrics of the songs not as individual, but find their place in the larger journey. A journey of a child being reborn from the flesh of an adult who strayed for too long on a path that differed from their soul’s direction. This song is the prologue to their journey, the crack in the egg before they see their true reflection. This is the beginning of their unsteady journey, as what’s found must first be lost.
