This is my painting titled „Echo, Iridescent“. It’s 180 x 130cm. In the background, you can see a pattern I took from a Renaissance inlaid, marbled wall. The rest of the work plays In Its composition with symmetry. I also used special colours, so seeing the work in person totally changes the impression.

This is my painting titled „Chaos in the South“. It measures 2,2 x 3m, and it’s one of the first works where I really started noticing two things: how layers create depth, and how, within a painting, we can only focus on and make sense of certain parts if areas have different spatial logics. The other is how strongly colour can change the feeling of a work. If I had used a colder or bluer palette, the entire work would have felt different. The edges would feel harder, the forms more brutal. But like this, there is a certain warmth within the work - despite the chaos. #harmgerdes #painting #abstractart by @harmgerdes

I keep looking at two aspects of this painting. The first is colour; the second is depth. I really enjoy the warm tones and softness of the palette, with stronger orange tones gently emerging. This painting is titled “Split Personality”. It measures 1,6m x 2,4m and it reveals a key motif that I try to depict in my work. The bringing together of forms or compositions that are unexpected or don’t belong together. In this painting the grey boxes clearly cut through the painting. They separate themselves in both colour and form. Yet the overall painting feels like a whole. This is one of the latest paintings I showed at the Kunsthalle in Darmstadt. It’s titled „Crimson“ and is 180x220cm. It is not only an investigation into red and how I can depict light and shadow through different tones without using black, but also brings together contrasting forms. The outburst in colour is reflected in the contrast of forms. Architectural blue and rigid forms contrast with the more organic, rounded shapes on the right.

This is a series of five paintings that I showed @kunsthalledarmstadt earlier this year. Growing up in the same town, I developed an early special relationship with Art Nouveau. This is my painting „Chromatic“ from my show @kunsthalledarmstadt, on view earlier this year. It was my largest painting to date, measuring 2 x 5m. I liked the idea of needing time to walk past it. The colour changes from cold blue hues to warm, bright colours, like a glimpse of a spectrum or the change from night to daytime. If you walk right to left, you might experience a sunset. I never work on a painting with a clear intention, often I simply follow a vague idea that develops as I paint. #harmgerdes #painting by @harmgerdes

Wait for the scene where I show the drawing. This is a painting of mine from earlier this year. I particularly like it. It does play with symmetry, but in a different way than my earlier paintings. The statical elements that my earlier works had are now, in a way, columns of colours. I'm currently in Berlin and enjoying it. I'll be here until August, then I'll head back to Athens. My view of the city has already changed quite a bit. Growing up in Germany, I never really paid much attention to Berlin. Neither as a place I’d like to live nor as anything particularly special. Friends moved there after school, so I visited often but never stayed longer. I'm happy for everyone I've met so far; it's definitely the people around you who make or break a place. taken in Berlin, Germany by @harmgerdes

Impressions from the beautiful island of Hydra. It’s my third year visiting it now, and there are hardly any other days in the year that can compete with the quality of exhibitions you can see in and around Athens and the number of friends from the art world coming for the opening days of Deste.
