In Woudrichem stands a sculpture that balances strength and fragility.
Steel roots anchor it firmly to the earth, while translucent Lexan wings catch the light and shift in color as the sun moves across the sky. By sunset, they glow in changing hues — a reminder that nothing is ever still, even in silence.

In Woudrichem stands a sculpture that combines the strength of steel with the transparency of Lexan.
“When the Tree Keeps His Wings” is a large-scale public artwork I realized as visual artist, commissioned by the municipality of Woudrichem.

Created in close collaboration with Policy Officer Art & Culture, the work symbolizes both rootedness and freedom — a tree that never loses its wings

For the landscape of the province Brabant on the Netherlands I designed this sculpture to embrace the sunsets. After 13 years it still stands beautiful in the round a bound of the village of Almkerk.

The work begins on the floor.

Working at this scale means entering the image: walking, kneeling, reaching, and allowing the body to establish its rhythm. Lines travel across the surface, gestures overlap, and the materials remain inside the field as temporary markers of the process.
This is the first layer of a larger installation inspired by @brunoberle_ and presented as part of Let Them Eat Paint. The work will continue to change as new layers alter the way it occupies the space.
Everything, now: not as a finished image, but as a form still becoming.

Title inspired by tudo pra agora by Batata Boy, Bruno Berle & Snowfuks.

The last painting I made in this studio.

I allowed the surface to come away from the wall, folding and collapsing the painting into its own space.

The final gesture was not to finish it, but to let it change.

Coming together.
Parts of epoxy were allowed to merge while still liquid. Other parts hardened separately and were connected afterwards.
The process moves between letting things happen and intervening — between separation and connection.
Looking at the resulting image, I started to see something resembling fertilisation, or the interdependence of opposing forms in yin and yang. Not as an illustration, but as an abstraction: forms meeting, entering, separating and becoming something else.
Letting the process determine part of the work.

Fragments, dried layers, painted surfaces and leftover material are brought together rather than discarded.

As they accumulate, painting starts to lose its surface. Colour becomes thickness, weight and volume.

What was left from making becomes material for making again.

A surface becoming a form.

For this experiment, Andrej and I developed what we started calling the “epoxy swing”: suspending and swinging my flexible painted surface while the epoxy is still setting.
The movement shifts the material continuously. I can initiate and influence the movement, but the final form only becomes fixed when the epoxy sets.
A collaboration between intention, movement, gravity and material.

What remains of a painting when it is torn apart?

The painted canvas is torn into strips, breaking the image into fragments.

Instead of trying to reconstruct what was there, I let the fragments become part of another form. Parts disappear. Others become visible only through the act of tearing.

Destruction becomes part of making.

What happens when the painting itself becomes material?

I started folding and shaping the painted canvas while the epoxy was still setting. Parts of the image disappeared into the folds, while other forms emerged.

I could influence the direction, but not fully predict what would remain visible once the material settled.

The painting was no longer only an image. Its surface, weight and resistance became part of the work.
