The Information Age is done. The Imagination Age is here.

And while everyone’s trying to make sense of the change and disruption, too few are talking about the underlying shift from a knowledge economy to a wisdom economy.

The currency is changing. Knowledge is now abundant and cheap. Wisdom is increasingly rare and invaluable.

Big news!! 🙌

It’s been 6 years since my last book. Publishing The Wonder Switch in 2020 changed my life and the trajectory of my career, and now it’s time for the next one.

A lot of speakers write books, then spend the new few years speaking on what they wrote. I tend to do it in reverse.

I’ve spent the last few years sharing this paradigm on live stages, refining the ideas through hundreds of conversations with leaders in almost every industry. Then I saw down and wrote the book.

I’m pumped that on September 22nd, we release “Start with Wow: How Leaders Thrive in the Age of Imagination.” 🚀

We’re in the middle of an AI revolution. And yet, this is not a book about AI.

The machines can hand us answers now. What they can’t give us is wonder, or the imagination to see what isn’t there yet. That part is still ours. The Information Age is over, but we aren’t now in the AI age…we’re in the Imagination Age. And the leaders who thrive in it will be the ones who start with wow before they rush to how.

The Wow Window is open, and it’s time to stop how-ing the wow to death. That’s the kind of creative leadership this moment is asking for.

One more quick note…

Over the last year or two, I’ve had to say no to a lot of speaking and podcast invitations. That’s changing. Over the next few months, we’ve kept some space on the calendar for exactly that.

If you host a podcast and want to talk about Start with Wow, I’d love to come on. And if you want to bring this to your team, we’ve opened a little extra room this fall for virtual keynotes and workshops beyond my usual calendar boundaries. We’ll build it around the book and get a copy into the hands of everyone int he room, physical or virtual.

There’s a lot going on in my world at the moment, and far more going on in our collective worlds. But today, I’m mostly just grateful that so many reading this take the time to stop your scroll, read my words, and care about thinking deeply and doing work that matters. 🙏

The first thing your brain does after a diagnosis is build every worst case scenario it can think of. That is not a character flaw and it is not weak faith. That is a body sitting in survival mode doing exactly what it was designed to do, rehearsing the worst thing so it cannot catch you off guard.

Harris said something on the podcast I have not stopped thinking about. Worry is a misuse of your imagination.

You are already imagining. At 2am, with no new information, you are already writing an entire future in your head. The same imagination that builds the worst case is the one that can hold a different story, and he calls that starting with wow instead of how.

How keeps you stuck trying to map out a path you cannot see yet. Wow gives you permission to believe this might unfold differently than the version you have already decided on.

We lived fifteen minutes at a time during Kicker’s treatment because that is how he lived it, and it was the only thing that kept my imagination from running three rounds ahead of where we actually were.

Your child’s story is not finished being written. I believe that with everything I have.

We got addicted to having all of the answers.

As a professional magician, I’ve watched as audiences have been conditioned by the Information Age to feel increasingly uncomfortable with mystery. We skip right over the wow, and fast forward straight to the how.

And once our “how?” gets answered, we feel a little better for a while, simply because we mistake the illusion of knowledge for the depth of understanding. As if knowing the secret to a magic tricks makes you a magician.

Since Guttenberg invented the printing press and gave humanity the power to distribute knowledge at scale, knowledge became the currency. The more you had, the more value you were able to deliver.

For 500 years, that was the deal. Knowledge was power, and the ones who had the most led everyone else.

Along the way, our wonder has atrophied. We’ve learned to view ambiguity as a threat, the unknown as a weakness, and the discomfort of not knowing as something to escape instead of something to sit patiently with.

So we built a whole world around the craving. We worshiped at the altar of a knowledge-based, memorization-driven education, and we’re still preparing kids for a world that no longer exists. We taught them to have the answer, right up until the moment a machine could produce those answers faster than they can.

The Information Age was awesome. And it some ways, it was awful. Regardless of the good and the bad, it is over. It’s very obvious that we’re stepping into a new chapter of human history, but far too few are realizing that this new chapter needs an entirely new paradigm.

So much is unknown. But what it is clear already is that the change that’s coming doesn’t reward the people best at being certain. It rewards the ones who keep their capacity to wonder. To sit in the mystery long enough for something new to arrive, and ask the questions instead of racing to close them.

Wonder is the scarce resource now, along with the wisdom that comes with it.
