halcyon, oil on panel, 40” x 50”, 2025

I spray painted the cloudy background this piece last summer, but had been waiting for inspiration for its subject. Then, I came across some images I took of Ospreys in Long Island and composited them to create this reference.

Halcyon (hal-see-on) is an especially idyllic or peaceful period of time, but its meaning comes from halcyon’s original definition: a latin american bird of legend that nests on the ocean and calms the tides with its wings. I think of the “biblically accurate angelic” surrealism of this painting as either impossible entirely or as a multiple/ long exposure of the Osprey’s wings fluttering, paying homage to both the title’s meanings.

Exhibition Review (excerpt): “Harrison Haft - Nuclear Eden” at Collective Z Gallery, Chinatown

Below is an excerpt from my newest review on Whitehot Magazine! The link to the full review is in one of my recent stories:

Mythology is often perceived as only a historical construct, but contemporary myth-making has its place in the undercurrents of today’s visual culture. Harrison Haft, an artist and filmmaker, recently unveiled a voluminous body of work in his debut solo exhibition Nuclear Eden that speak to of-the-moment issues and themes stemming from a more universalized and timeless nature. Passive glances have no place in the world of Haft, for provocation is the name of the painter’s game.

Direct, piercing, downright penetrating gazes oriented towards the viewer recur among each of his subjects: human, animal, and mutants. Hindsight (2026) is an oil painting whose luminescent glow is the result of the latex-primed panel upon which is the image of a peacock with its ostentatious feathers crowding the entire composition. The reflective eye of the peacock is not the only look we are receiving as the ocular patterns that cover the feathers amplify our awareness of being stared at. Something about this image gives off the visual embellishment of a 17th Century pronkstilleven painting, but with even more of an uncanny seriousness.

There’s 1 day left to see my solo exhibition, Nuclear Eden! 👨🏻‍🎨

This body of work has occupied my mind, my studio, and my life for the last 2 years, with 3 of the works originating from even earlier. These works are built through layers of oil paint, metal, lacquer, flame, acid, experimentation, and revision, they explore transformation, rupture, desire, memory, and the strange beauty that can emerge from decay.

Positioned between genesis and apocalypse, these works are intended to evoke a powerful, almost compulsory physical sensation—an epiphanic jolt that provokes and awakens in a cultural landscape where so much media feels dulled, diluted, and mass-produced. That moment of revelation is central to the work and intertwines with the academic, mythological, and material contexts embedded within each piece. Unabashedly departing from the comfortable tendency to celebrate the vague or nondescript, the paintings confront the viewer immediately, then retreat into mystique upon closer inspection as their surfaces begin to fragment and unravel in iconoclastic ways. Seeing these deeply personal visions resonate with others has meant more than I can express.

The title Nuclear Eden speaks to a paradox that has long fascinated me: the coexistence of creation and destruction, paradise and catastrophe, tenderness and violence. Throughout the exhibition, bodies mutate, associations dissolve, and familiar forms burgeon into something dreamlike, unsettling, and alive, simultaneously archaic and hyper-modern.

My favorite moments from the Knock Me Back music video that just released!

Still smile when I look at the outdoor shots (slide 5 & 6) with the slow-mo spraying fire hydrant. We shot that part in Williamsburg in June (during pride month) and a group of Puerto Rican men who were playing a board game outside turned off their Latin music and starting playing it’s raining men and cheering supportively just off frame shouting “You’re safe here, we support you.” Major I love New York moment for sure.🥹❤️

It was incredible working with and directing such a lovely team and dreaming up these shots for @elliotthansen_

No VFX whatsoever, everything (besides the cutouts) was achieved practically with lighting and UV contacts , shoutout to my incredible assistant camera @mao_tauro
