Steam rises from the waterlogged earth as a bear roams the coastline in search of only two things: sustenance and an opportunity to mate.

One of the wildest moments we’ve ever experienced. This brown bear sow and her cubs walked right up to my brother and me, pausing just a few feet away. As one of the cubs passed by, I was able to capture a photo of it passing by my brother.

If it seems like I’m obsessed with bears, that’s because I am.

Anyways, I hope y’all enjoy a few of my favorite photos I’ve captured over the past year!

The wildlife did most of the work, as usual.

When the wilderness looks back.

A gorgeous brown bear glances in my direction as she glides across an open meadow at sunset. What a moment.

A mother brown bear and her cub play fight along the beach at midday.

Play fighting between mothers and their cubs is a common behavior that serves several important developmental purposes.

Cubs get the chance to practice combative techniques and tactics, build stamina and strength, and further develop communication skills—all of which will be necessary for survival as they grow older.

A successful seafood outing.

When I lived in Monterey, California, I was amazed to learn that the first documented European encounter with brown bears in what is now the United States occurred just down the street from my apartment, along the shores of Monterey Bay.

In December 1602, a Spanish expedition led by Sebastián Vizcaíno observed multiple brown bears scavenging the carcass of a whale that had washed ashore. Today, of course, brown bears no longer patrol California’s Central Coast. The last known California grizzly was killed in 1922, and the final reported sighting occurred two years later.

This bit of history was front of mind last month as I photographed bears foraging for marine prey along the Alaskan coast, and I couldn’t help but wonder whether similar scenes might have unfolded along the biodiverse shores of Monterey centuries ago.

Revisiting and re-editing footage from one of my most memorable wildlife encounters.

I crossed paths with this black bear on a quiet afternoon last fall at the edge of a coastal forest. He was sitting upright snatching berries and leaves off a branch with his tongue before marking a nearby tree to leave a signature behind.

The bear noticed me but appeared completely unbothered by my presence and carried on with his routine as if I wasn’t there.

Interrupting my steady stream of Alaska content to feature this massive North Carolina black bear.

Most of North Carolina’s truly enormous black bears reach their greatest weights in late fall after months of hyperphagia, when they accumulate tremendous fat reserves before winter.

This bear was different.

I spotted him in early summer, and while he certainly wasn’t lean, what immediately stood out wasn’t body fat—it was his sheer frame and musculature.

I’ve observed countless bears throughout the Atlantic Coastal Plain, and this male may be the most physically imposing individual I’ve ever encountered.

Of course, bears and humans are wildly different creatures, but every now and then I’ll witness a behavior that reminds me so much of human nature—especially when it comes to the art of relaxation.
