today i graduate with a master of arts in visual culture.

when i finished film school, i never got the graduation ceremony because of covid. like many people, i went straight into figuring things out. i worked as a photographer and videographer, but i always found myself coming back to what i loved most: writing, analyzing and talking about film and music for tv/film.

tiktok and youtube unexpectedly became that outlet. i never imagined that sharing the way i think about albums, films and visual culture would reach over a million people.

through my platform, i’ve built a space where i explore music from a visual perspective…pairing albums with design aesthetics, interiors, films and cultural moments to show how sound shapes the way we experience images, spaces and memory. what started as making videos gradually became an extension of my academic interests.

studying visual culture didn’t change what i was interested in it gave me the language to understand and articulate why i was making those connections in the first place. it helped me think more critically about the relationship between music, film, design and the ways we assign meaning to images.

that journey eventually inspired my dissertation, “The Spatialization of Music: Visual-Aesthetic Criticism and
Emotional Engagement in the Age of TikTok”

alongside writing my dissertation, i worked full-time while collaborating with record labels and sound designers getting opportunities that grew directly from the work i began sharing online. it’s surreal to think that making videos about albums and films would lead me here.

this degree is more than another qualification. it’s a reminder that sometimes the things you’re naturally drawn to can become both your research and your career.

thank you to my sister @laurajanecops for capturing this moment and my favorite bar in london where i spent all of my time while writing my dissertation @slimjims_liquorstore for letting me shoot there! taken in London, United Kingdom by @harrrpppp
