2/2 The Black Panther cubs They are the children of the Black Panther party – the self-styled Panther cubs. Born into the 1970s revolutionary movement for Black equality and self-determination, they have lived in the shadows of a promised land that was never attained. We join them as they continue to wrestle, 50 years later, with the dichotomy of their extraordinary childhoods: the enormous pride and love it gave them as members of the Black Panther family, and the booming loss they endured – of parents, of security, and of the hope for radical change that did not materialise. That hope lives on in the cubs, and their reflections on America’s current crisis offers burning lessons for today. Cubs Sans. A new typeface from the Guardian inspired by the Black Panther newspaper. Cubs Sans utilises sharp, assertive lines and a tight, space conscious structure demanding attention like the revolutionary headlines it echoes. ••• Editorial creative director @chrisclarkecc Lead designer @harrryfischer Motion graphics @purcell.work Picture editor @fletchinator Journalism @edpilkington Director @aurorabobora Producer @latajh Executive producer @katyaochagavia Head of documentaries @lindsay_poulton @guardiandesign by @harrryfischer

To finish off 2025, we looked ahead to 2035 imagining everyday life as AI becomes more capable than humans. A great collaboration with @jay__cover, this piece uses a series of short, comic-style strips to explore how the era of general artificial intelligence might feel. Familiar moments from work, health, and home are reimagined through bold illustrations that make the future feel close, human, and slightly unsettling. ••• Team: @guardiandesign, @jay__cover, Rob Booth, Dan Milmo, @harrryfischer, @pip_lev, @richcousins_, @taraherman, @chrisclarkecc by @harrryfischer
The Bedside @guardian 2025 ↓ This year’s brief to @harrryfischer centred on one idea: the accelerating rise of AI. It feels like we’re in another moment of evolution, and it’s the lens through which so much of 2025 now comes into focus. As technology surges ahead and the world grapples with instability and division, the question only gets sharper: what does it mean to stay human? ↓ For me, this cover captures that tension beautifully. It feels digital but imperfect. A little glitchy, a little tactile; echoing machine logic while still holding on to human warmth. And then there’s the neon: synthetic, brash, unmistakably non-human, cutting through the softer textures and giving the design its jolt of modernity. ↓ Designed by @harrryfischer and finished with a silver @pantone 877u — a nod to our 25th edition (last slide)— paired with a hit of Pantone Fluro Orange 804u on reversed stock. by @harrryfischer

The island of Okinawa witnessed the bloodiest battle of the Pacific War. Today, it is home to almost 50,000 American troops; the frontline in any conflict with China or North Korea. In this documentary film and feature @justin.mccurry and @davidlevene follow Takamatsu Gushiken as he searches for the remains of thousands of soldiers and civilians who are still buried in the soil. ••• The team Editorial creative director @chrisclarkecc Design director @richcousinsdesign Design and art direction @harrryfischer Development @pip_lev @alleminiworld Director and cinematographer @davidlevene Editor and exec producer @loztopham Commissioning editors @bonniemalkin @lindsay_poulton by @harrryfischer
1/2 The Black Panther cubs Radical change isn’t free delves into the experiences of nine children of Black Panther Party members, exploring the profound impact of their parents’ activism on their lives. These individuals, often referred to as “Panther cubs,” reflect on the sacrifices and challenges faced by their families during the Black Panther Party’s quest for Black self-determination in the 1960s and 1970s. The piece highlights their enduring pride in their heritage, while also acknowledging the emotional and societal toll of growing up with revolutionary parents. It underscores the resilience of these individuals as they continue to advocate for justice and equality, drawing parallels between past struggles and contemporary issues. The article is typeset using Guardian Cubs Sans. My first type design project inspired by the Black Panther newspaper. Cubs Sans utilises sharp, assertive lines and a tight, space conscious structure demanding attention like the revolutionary headlines it echoes. ••• Editorial creative director @chrisclarkecc Lead designer @harrryfischer Development @alleminiworld @harrryfischer Print design @ceeg @brunohaward Picture editor @fletchinator Archive photography @stephenshames Journalism @edpilkington @guardiandesign by @harrryfischer
