1/2 The Black Panther cubs
Radical change isn’t free delves into the experiences of nine children of Black Panther Party members, exploring the profound impact of their parents’ activism on their lives. These individuals, often referred to as “Panther cubs,” reflect on the sacrifices and challenges faced by their families during the Black Panther Party’s quest for Black self-determination in the 1960s and 1970s. The piece highlights their enduring pride in their heritage, while also acknowledging the emotional and societal toll of growing up with revolutionary parents. It underscores the resilience of these individuals as they continue to advocate for justice and equality, drawing parallels between past struggles and contemporary issues.
The article is typeset using Guardian Cubs Sans. My first type design project inspired by the Black Panther newspaper. Cubs Sans utilises sharp, assertive lines and a tight, space conscious structure demanding attention like the revolutionary headlines it echoes.
