“Be an artist”, they said
“You’ll like it enough to do it for free”, they said
“You don’t need utensils to eat spaghetti”, they said

I really don’t mind the smaller parts of this business…like straining paint and using my fingers to clear a clogged paint strainer. And it’s true: I do love making art, but I think that trope about doing it for free is harmful. If you like art, buy some or at least enjoy it without putting dismissive cliches on it.

The vast majority of people I meet don’t say stuff like that and you are appreciated very much! Also, how you eat your spaghetti is your business, don’t let “them” tell you how to live your life;)

Heading to Phillip’s Mill to gallery sit and represent my work in their epic 97th juried art show. I’ll be there from 1-3 today, hope you can make it. I’m also open to giving false historical facts about the mill and pretending to be psychic.

Dog, dog memorial commissions specifically, are so much. They mean a lot to the recipient, help with healing, remind us of all the things, and there’s a decent amount of (self-applied) pressure but I absolutely love doing them.

They’re all different but this one is unique because it’s a painting of a person and their dog within a scene that has broader meaning. It was commissioned as a gift for a grieving friend and I love the idea of non-traditional memorial pieces. I like to think artworks like this bring happiness and act as a catalyst to tell those stories and relive those memories for many many years.

I woke up with the idea to split a painting into 2 panels. It creates a diptych and, in this case, I made a divided frame to enhance the effect. I’d like to explore this idea further with some interesting multi-panel shapes.

This piece, “Flower Fields” features the amazing flowers at @bloomingglenfarm which you can see some of the heavier texture when the video shows the painting from the side. I’m betting a lot of you love the sky just as much as the flowers.

This “22x24” oil pastel is available and makes its debut at @exhibitbgallery for tonight’s September pop-up opening. Stop by, the show’s awesome! If you have other plans tonight, we’ll also be open Saturday 11-4.

Giddyup! I was eating breakfast today when I remembered today is the day @phillipsmillcommunity posts a list of accepted work for their 97th annual juried show. I’m super excited to say I saw my name in that list (and only mildly choked on my eggs)! What a way to start the day.

My painting “Catching the Light” is in the show as well as 2 matted ink drawings, “Barn on the Mountain” and “A Day in the Life”. If you live in Souderton, you might recognize the building from my painting as the back of the building where @raw.replenishsouderton and @theconfectionarypa are located (absolutely try both places as they’re incredible!).

A massive thank you to Phillip’s Mill Community Association and the jurors!!

I had the pleasure of making a drawing of @peppesteaks last week! I’ve made drawings of a bunch of other properties for them before. This time they wanted a simplified rendition to use in some marketing which was a perfect fit for my new series of chonky ink drawings. We decided to remove everything except the storefront and sidewalk and then I got to work and everyone loved the finished piece. It was also important to get the little window graphics of chicken, beef, and a pig’s butt!

I make fun simplified drawings like this one, more detailed scale-accurate versions, and fully painted building portraits. Hit me up to get 1 of your home or business;)

Sometimes old paintings come back into your life and become something new. This bluebird box painting got a bit of a glow up. I’m kinda glad I got to see it again with fresh eyes and 18 years of experience.

In a funny twist, I was thinking about this piece about a week before it came back to me. I actually thought it had sold so it was a nice surprise.

Seriously, how is my dad 85? He’s doing great and enjoying retirement. I know Sonny is happy and paying attention to what I’m doing because he gets this funny smile and tells me, “you’re a pain in the ass” and chuckles giddily. He’s also a huge influence in my artistic journey because he could draw Popeye when I was a kid and thought it was bonkers amazing!

Go say happy birthday to a stranger, it’s a lot of fun;)

The drawing is ballpoint pen (my favorite from Rotring) on hot press watercolor paper (Arches of course!). Pic is in front of the fig tree he gave me.

This idea has been bouncing around in my head for so long, and it’s finally here!!

The idea is really simple: ink drawings in my style but in a color other than black ink. Blue seemed like the perfect place to start. I pass this farm often enough and somehow never drew/painted it. The drawing itself is made with a lovely rich blue felt tip pen and the sky is a subtle wash of diluted blue ink - wet on wet (if you’re into that kind of thing:)

I made a handmade frame for it and decided to go with a float mount. The watercolor paper (with my drawing on it) is suspended on a layer beneath which is smaller than the artwork. It gives the illusion of floating. I also lined the interior of the frame with archival white foamcore to make a sort of complete white space for the drawing to sit.

Available and going on display at @exhibitbgallery pop up on 8/21 5-9 & 8/22 11-4.

Every commission is you trusting me to convey your feelings with my art. I take that very seriously, but it also makes me incredibly proud and happy.

A longtime collector, and now friend, asked me to make a new piece. Something special for his daughter. I’ve made several pieces for this family over the years and happily said yes. This one features her favorite flower, Dame’s rocket: a wild plant that grows along the side of the road with purple flowers. He wanted an old fence post to add some context and we decided to feature a butterfly as well. The butterfly adds a much-needed pop of orange and yellow to balance the other colors. I built a frame as icing on the cake and now everyone’s loving “Roadside Garden”.
