People often advise us to cherish the good memories, yet sometimes, that advice only adds to the difficulty. My mind is only filled with the recollection of wonderful moments, spanning from just two weeks ago to ones that date back 26 years and everything in between. What makes it even more challenging is the realization that these moments are now finite.
I had intended to post the 2nd photo of my bibi (grandmother) last week, showcasing her immense pride in receiving US Citizenship. Achieving this had been her lifelong dream, and fate, in its bittersweet way, allowed her to enjoy this new privilege for just 16 days. In another 16 days she would have turned 95.
Bibi was one of the most unserious and humorous people I ever knew. I referred to her my favorite actress because, despite her limited knowledge of English, she possessed an ability to know exactly what to say and do to obtain any drugs she wanted from her doctors. Her favorite form of an icebreaker when meeting someone new was asking them their income and analyzing their response, before comparing it to those of anybody in her extended family. Despite her extreme hearing loss over the past decade, no scandal could escape her keen awareness. It didn't matter if you lived down the street, on the other side of the country, in a small town in Italy, a village in Punjab, or a city in the UK or Canada; she always had her finger on the pulse of gossip and was ever-ready to broadcast it.
But what truly set Bibi apart was her candid storytelling. One particular incident from my childhood comes to mind. She used to pick me up from elementary school, and one day, she shared a strange tale. With animated gestures and exaggerated mimicry, she recounted an encounter during her morning walk; a man with his hands down his pants, engaging in a strange and comical dance. My young brain couldn't quite grasp the situation, but she raised her hand at him and yelled in Punjabi, adding that he had smiled at this response from her. It wasn't until years later that I realized she had been recounting an encounter with an exhibitionist who was masturbating lol. Her laughter at that memory still echoes in my heart. by @harrybrarli
