When I tell people I had no idea my wife was going to just leave one day, they universally try to help me understand that "men don't always see the signs" of unhappy partners in a long-term relationship.

Fuck that.

I knew my partner extremely well. The truth is, she didn't spend months quietly planning to leave—knowing her, she had the impulsive idea and immediately acted on it. It took her over a year of complete silence to finally file for divorce. That is how long it took her to convince herself that she wasn't just being impulsive and destructive, but that she left because I was supposedly a terrible husband.

Never mind the fact that I was a fucking amazing husband.

To anyone who refuses to believe me: back off. I am smart, talented, kind, and generous. That is who I am, and that is how I live. I approached our marriage the way any healthy, enduring relationship requires—by embracing the genuine joy of having a reason to sacrifice my time, my comfort, and my ego for the person I loved.

Vanessa was selfish,cruel, and completely dishonest about our relationship and what she did during the divorce. She was the abuser. She was the bully and she was the one who was delusional about our relationship. I could never have given her enough attention, encouragement, sex, food, naps, to make her happy. And that's not my fault. That was not my job. by @harrygingles
