Henri Matisse is coming to H'ART Museum! Together with @centrepompidou, we present an exceptional exhibition of Henri Matisse, opening Saturday 3 October 2026. Chez Matisse – Masterpieces from Centre Pompidou offers a rich overview of his groundbreaking work. Featuring over 80 works, the exhibition places Matisse in dialogue with world-renowned contemporaries and followers such as Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko and Pablo Picasso. The exhibition is co-organized with Centre Pompidou and features works from its renowned Matisse collection, one of the most comprehensive in the world. Tickets are now available via the link in bio. Book before 1 August using the code PRESALE_MATISSE and get a €10 discount (valid on full-price tickets only). On Friday 22 May, The Land of Chocolate Sprinkles: Building a New World Together opens at H'ART Museum. Chocolate sprinkles (hagelslag) seem like an everyday product for many people, but they have a darker side: cacao, sugar, and palm oil are often produced on plantations where both people and nature pay a heavy price. The profits from those plantations flowed back to Europe, where they helped build the art museums we visit today. The exhibition is a solo presentation by the Congolese artist collective @catpc_lusanga, which gained international recognition two years ago as the Dutch representation at the prestigious Venice Biennale. Through their art, CATPC critiques the power structures of the international art world while actively reversing them. Using the proceeds from their work, they buy back exhausted plantation land and transform it into food forests, working towards greater biodiversity, local food security and a healthier climate worldwide. The exhibition features 30 chocolate sculptures and a series of embroidered portraits. Each work tells its own story of exploitation, inequality, and the resistance of both people and nature. ‘What I am pursuing above all is expression,’ - Henri Matisse. In this painting, La Blouse roumaine, you can see how Matisse stripped away everything unnecessary and only the feeling remained. That’s Matisse’s pursuit of expression. It’s not the likeliness of the woman that is the focus, but the traditional Romanian blouse. It took Matisse six months to paint this work and in each step he gradually erased the young girl to better emphasize the embroidered blouse. When you take a moment to really look, you see that the place occupied by bodies on the canvas matters as much as the empty spaces. Chez Matisse opens 3 October 2026 at H’ART Museum. What is really the subject in this painting? They are all competing for your attention at once: a nude figure, plants, patterned wallpapers, rugs, cushions, bowls of lemons, and mirrors. Matisse did that on purpose. In his Nice studio, he built an entire transformable world around his models with decorative patterns. The backdrops are actually the subject. With his fluid lines and bold patterns, he created what can only be described as a graphic alphabet. Enjoy it in full Chez Matisse at H’ART Museum. An exhibition co-organized with @centrepompidou. Renzo Martens (@renzomartens) explains the Vatican-inspired concept behind the unique arrangement of the sculptures in the exhibition. As a long-time collaborator of @catpc_lusanga, he has supported the collective in using art as a tool for social and economic change. Discover the art of CATPC in The Land of Chocolate Sprinkles. A grandmother is bitten in the forest by a strange creature. The poison spreads through her body, covering her skin in painful blisters. Yet, as if by a miracle, the blisters eventually bloom into flowers. This story, well known within the @catpc_lusanga community, inspired Poisonous Miracle by Thomas Leba. In Leba's sculpture, the creature takes the form of a chameleon, symbolizing colonial powers and their ever-changing demands. New religions, languages and economic systems were imposed on plantation communities, forcing people to constantly adapt. This is the poison of colonial power and money. In Poisonous Miracle, the question remains: will the beautiful flowers appear, or is money leading toward disaster? Both outcomes are still possible within this sculpture. According to Matisse, a painting in an interior spreads joy through color, giving us a lighter sense of life. In his view, a painting does more than capture reality. It enriches the world around us. You might not realise it with all the vivid colors, but much of Matisse’s work was made during the Second World War. In 1940, as Nazi forces swept across France, he chose to stay. He continued working from his studio in Nice while gravely ill, his marriage over and his family deep in the Resistance. In those same years, he painted interiors and still lifes, produced hundreds of drawings, illustrated books, and designed Verve magazine covers. His answer to the darkness seemed to be color. Can we find inspiration in that? Have a closer look Chez Matisse at H’ART Museum. An exhibition co-organized with @centrepompidou.
