Five minutes from Wall Street by water taxi and ten minutes from the Holland Tunnel, Bayonne Golf Club occupies one of the most unexpected sites in the New York metropolitan area.

The course was built on reclaimed brownfields along the harbor, and Hart Howerton designed the 15,000-square-foot clubhouse in stone and shingle to suit its dramatic setting. Porches and terraces look across New York’s busy harbor to the Manhattan skyline, and the club’s lighthouse stands as a new landmark at this international gateway. taken in Bayonne, New Jersey by @harthowerton

Our 2026 Michael Cunningham Hart Howerton Travel Fellow, Yana Kim, set out this Summer to explore holiday towns along the coasts of France and Spain.

Originally, modular construction brought these seaside vacations within reach of middle-class families in the 1960s and ‘70s. But it also produced some of the era’s most sculptural resort architecture: Jean Balladur’s pyramids at La Grande-Motte, Georges Candilis’s car-free village at Les Carrats, and Ricardo Bofill’s La Muralla Roja. In Episode 2 of Field Notes, Yana shares what she learned.

Applications for the 2027 Fellowship are now open. Learn more at the link in bio. by @harthowerton

How do you adapt a summer home for year-round living, while honoring the architectural traditions inherent to coastal design?

For this 1913 Shingle Style residence in East Hampton, Hart Howerton started by restoring and replacing the materials inherent to the home: Eastern White Cedar shingles, salvaged brick, and cypress windows and doors with restoration glass.

These details extended to the home’s addition, with a primary suite that both carries the material palette and accommodates full-time use. Together, the home pairs 21st-century living with time-honored design.

Introducing Yana Kim, our 2026 Michael Cunningham Hart Howerton Travel Fellow. The fellowship is awarded in memory of Michael Cunningham, a longtime Principal at Hart Howerton and a strong advocate for bridging professional practice and education.

Yana’s research explores the modular coastal holiday towns of France and Spain, from the pyramids of La Grande Motte to Ricardo Bofill’s La Manzanera, and how architects used repetition to create places that are both logical and playful.

Travel along the French and Spanish coasts through her eyes, and stay tuned as she shares what she discovered and how it can inspire designers today. by @harthowerton

At @ritzcarltonkeybiscayne, a once-dark entry now opens through a sweeping glass facade, carrying the eye from arrival straight to the water. That connection shaped Hart Howerton’s master plan, architecture, and landscape design across all 17 oceanfront acres. Heavy hardscape gave way to a fountain terrace and climate-resilient planting. A beachfront once cut off by walls and dense plantings now opens through pathways and native coastal vegetation to the shoreline.

We’re thrilled to share that the Belle Haven Community Campus was awarded the 2026 @metropolismag Planet Positive Award in the Design for Resilience Category.

The campus was designed as a resilient and adaptable civic hub for the historically underserved community in Menlo Park, California. The project consolidates a senior center, community center, youth center, recreational pools, and branch library into a single integrated campus, and advances resilience across three dimensions: building and operations; climate; and community.

Rome has long been a destination for architects, artists, and designers to sketch and learn from its remarkable monuments and urban spaces. Art in Practice continued this tradition at the end of the summer with a sketching trip to the Eternal City. Early, mid-career, and senior members of our design team from across our offices came together for this immersive, 5-day experience, learning and refining observation and representation techniques among the city’s centuries-old monuments and ruins.

Sharpening our eye and our hand gives us a keen sense of design proportion and harmony, from the scale of a city to the finest architectural detail. This practice directly informs our ability to orchestrate a thoughtful, cohesive design, from an urban plan down to a column capital.

We’re grateful to Paul Blazek, Design Director, for leading Art in Practice together with a team of designers across our offices. The initiative is a cornerstone of our team’s culture of curiosity, collaboration, and connection. taken in Rome, Italy by @harthowerton

Climb the stairs to the secluded second floor of Primland’s former horse stables and enjoy traditional bluegrass tunes and a southern supper. As part of Hart Howerton’s master plan, @primlandauberge expands its amenities beyond a collection of residences, reimagining existing structures across the landscape. The former stables are repurposed as a rustic gathering place, extending the resort experience deeper into the property.
