It’s officially been a week since my University of Saskatchewan TEDx debut, where I had the opportunity to share my academic journey and what I’ve learned through researching healing and witnessing the beautiful queer joy that can live at the edges.

I’m deeply grateful to all my friends and family who came out to support me as I took the TEDx stage. The love in the room, from people I knew and people I didn’t, was phenomenal! So much so that, in one particular moment, it took me by surprise and transformed my talk into something I hadn’t practiced or planned.

While my talk centered on queer joy, it felt important early on to speak to the reality that so many queer kids have faced, and are still facing, today. I shared my experience growing up and being haunted by the question: “Would my parents rather have a gay son or a dead son?”

During the talk, a wave of emotion emerged that never surfaced in any of my rehearsals. With a photo of young Andrew on the screen, and knowing the words that were about to come, the weight of my past experiences with suicidality hit in a new way. My voice trembled as I struggled to get the words out. A story I’ve shared countless times before suddenly felt different in that moment; I let the audience in and allowed them to hear those words while seeing the little version of me on the screen that carried them.

I woke up the next day with a major vulnerability hangover. I honestly felt disappointed, wishing I had delivered a more polished talk, or maybe just wishing I had delivered something different.

I struggled with how raw and vulnerable I had been, knowing the talk would soon be out in the world. I ruminated on how I came across and what people might think. It was only through my dear friend Linzi’s reminder of who I was speaking to in that moment, which was all the little queer kids out there, that something shifted. That they will get to hear my words and know that even in their struggle, there can be beauty, freedom, and joy in being queer.

After a week of processing, I can finally and authentically say that I’m looking forward to sharing my talk with the world. Stay tuned!
