Nearly 14 years ago, I had the incredible opportunity to showcase my artwork at @vitaminwater photo exhibit in Sweden alongside the legendary photographer @jamelshabazz . During this unforgettable experience, I connected with the late, great Swedish producer @redastaire, also known as Freddie Cruger. Red Astaire’s contributions to the music world are profound, with his iconic black gold 12″ vinyls and the underground hit “Follow Me” remix of @thedangelo “Left And Right” leaving a lasting impact on DJs and music enthusiasts globally.

On the night of the exhibit opening, we went to his home studio, smoked, drank Red Stripe, and talked about our shared love for music. As he played beats, I freestyled, and Fred recorded me. To my surprise, a year later, he wrote to tell me he was going to release the freestyle on vinyl. Despite my attempts to rewrite and re-record it, he insisted that the existing version was the only one we needed.

We planned to reconnect a few years ago during my return to Sweden, but tragically, Fred passed away from a heart attack just before my trip. In honor of his legacy and our unforgettable collaboration, I decided to upload this song to the digital world for everyone to enjoy.

This release is more than just music; it’s a tribute to a remarkable artist who has shaped my career and the soundscapes of countless others. I believe it will resonate deeply with listeners and DJs who appreciate the art of storytelling through music. Sometimes I listen to songs I made and I genuinely become a fan of myself. This song is one of those songs. When @parakhan and I were working on this project it was literally just us kicking it after I would work a shift at the @acedtla ! The Ace isn’t here anymore but we are! Go stream a song or two. Wow time fliesss! Ten years ago I shot this video for the song “WILD4THENIGHT with my brother @brock_mills ! He rented a studio and said let’s go shoot. We had so much fun that day! There are videos everywhere telling artists to share more and post every day on their social media. For me, it’s always been weird to seek support for your art in this way, but I’m going to give it a shot! LOL. I’m from the school of pressing up your own product, whether CD, tape, or vinyl, and giving people something to hold and engage with. That’s what @parakhan and I attempted to do when we did this project. I would pull up to his spot and roll up while he would make the beat and give me time to write. We’d record it, and he’d make a video, and it’d be online the next day. I don’t think I’ve ever told him how conducive this process is for an artist such as myself. On 2/16/23, I booked time w/ @itspurps Purps of 808-Mafia at Grapeful Studios to record songs that I had previously demoed at home. Throughout the creation of these demos, I spent a significant amount of time bonding with my newborn son. He even features on the song “Listings.” This project is the first time I did it all, handling every aspect from production to mixing and mastering, and it’s dedicated to him.

Every day, I’d wake up between 4am and 6am, fire up the MPC, craft a beat, and either write or freestyle the demo, allowing my son to hear them. The ones he responded to positively were the ones I kept—simple as that. Though I hadn’t anticipated it taking this long to complete, as I uploaded it onto the internet, I realized that I had recorded it all during the same week in February last year. So, I guess the timing couldn’t be more perfect.
