EPROM is an obsolete storage memory and precursor to todays flash drives and usb sticks. Memory can be erased in an hour with a high intensity UV light or a week in sunlight. The colourful square is the whole chip, visible through quartz window. Colors are from diffraction caused by the transistor grid that stores the bits. 512kB 150ns access time, becoming obsolete at 1991 date of manufacture. #eprom #rainbow by @hashtag_tikonen

I bought Soviet made Nixie tubes from Ukraine and made a display array that can be controlled from a PC over USB. A tube can display digits and commas. Each digit is made from an iron wire shaped to a corresponding number. Light comes from noble gas discharge. You can see the same technology in extension cords with a switch lamp. #nixietube by @hashtag_tikonen

I built my own portable Bluetooth speaker. Kids have their JBL's but this is PCL2000. Lithium battery powered portable tube amplifier based on PCL84 vacuum tube used in 1960s televisions. Sound inputs are 3.5mm jack or Bluetooth aptX. Roland Juno-106 tuning after repairs. This 1980's synth is an analog digital hybrid and has a plethora of biases for oscillators and amplifiers. It's also somewhat temperature dependent and can sound a bit different on a studio or on a live stage. #rolandjuno106 by @hashtag_tikonen

Old 1920's ship radio converted to a dimmable night light. Dimming circuit is my own design and can be controlled by tapping the wall (it detects vibrations) or by a phone app.Original radio vacuum tubes had thorium fliaments and would have had a distinct yellow glow, nothing this bright though.#oldradio #nighlight by @hashtag_tikonen

Found a dead bedbug in an old book. The book was printed in the late 1500 hundreds so who knows how long it has been entombed. At least 80 years for sure. The bug was delivered to the Natural History museum for DNA analysis.#bedbug #medievalbook #helsinkinaturalhistorymuseum by @hashtag_tikonen

Exceptionally well preserved rotary phone. It's basically factory original and a hybrid product using 1910's handset and 1930's main unit. It was intended to be connected directly to a central and had no audio hybrid transformer. Added the functionality with modern (1980's) style circuit.Handset black parts are bakelite and painted oak.Built at Royal telephone factory, Nynashamn, Sweden.#oldphones by @hashtag_tikonen

Experimenting with 3D printed lamp shades. Very difficult to capture on camera but they are very bright in real life. Print is less than 1mm thick and natural PLA. Conical shade is printed as single continuous spiral and shows an interesting Fresnel effect.#3dprint #lampshade by @hashtag_tikonen
