We acquired this stunning work a few years ago, I was waiting for a substantial Thorton Dial to become available and I believed this was it. Proud Poppa!Thorton DialTitle: The Clouds at Ground LevelYear: 2003Medium: Mixed MediaMaterials: Plasto bottles, machine parts, roots, found metal, clothing, plastid twine, wire, enamel, spray paint, and Splash Zone compound on canvas on woodScale: 86x65in Drawing from history andautobiography, self-taught artistThornton Dial combined mass-produced objects, industrial scraps, and organic matter in complex paintings, assemblages, and wall reliefs exploring Black struggle in the American South. Before he was plucked from relative obscurity in the 1980s, Dial was employed as a metalworker in a railcar factory. In his spare time, he made large-scale sculptures from whatever materials he could scavenge-torn clothes, wire, tin, or okra roots, for instance. He often recycled old works to create new ones. Dial's raw, expressionistic brushwork, which embraced both abstract and figurative elements, has earned him comparisons instance. He often recycled old works to create new ones. Dial's raw, expressionistic brushwork, which embraced both abstract and figurative elements, has earned him comparisons to Jackson Pollock, Anselm Kiefer, and Willem de Kooning. His work has been exhibited at the High Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the de Young Museum, among many other institutions, and belongs in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.On the secondary market, Dial's work has sold for seven figures. by @hassanksmithcollection

One of my favorites in our collection, with endless depth and deep perspective you can never go wrong with the great @rickloweofficial.Title: UntitiledYear:2019Medium: Work on PaperMaterials: Ink and Marker on PaperScale: 34x27inRick Lowe roots his socially engaged art practice in community building. Originally trained as a painter, he redefined his practice in the early 1990s to more directly address the social, economic, and cultural needs of his community. In 1993, Lowe co-founded Project Row Houses in Houston's historically Black Third Ward, transforming a series of dilapidated buildings into a vibrant arts and community hub. Influenced by Joseph Beuys and John Biggers, Lowe has continued to blur the lines between art and activism. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at documenta 14 and the Venice Architecture Biennale. He was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2014. This 2019 drawing, while more traditional in medium, reflects the conceptual framework of an artist deeply invested in social transformation. by @hassanksmithcollection

One of my new favorites we brought into the collection last year. Title: The Reminisce Over YouYear: 2025Medium: PaintingMaterials: Acrylic , Pigment, Soft Pastel, Metalpoint and Steel on WoodScale: 48x66inSydney Cain is a visual artist born and raised in San Francisco, California. The artist establishes the unseen presences of the deceased as predominant focal points that viewing audiences must confront. Resultant works trouble associations with death and suffering by offering reverent narratives that reveal the power ofremembrance, spiritual evolution, healing, and wisdom thatacknowledging transitioned souls elicits for people of African descent.Through large scale and intimate works, Cain honors those who have passed on and provides them with sacred sites to be reborn andreimagined as heroes in meta-realities. by @hassanksmithcollection
