Every now and again I remind myself of how much fun it was to provide these two music legends with the grooves they needed. ❤️ a “once in a lifetime musical experience experience” . Right up my alley musically and one of those rare gigs where the musicians were treated with the utmost respect all around . So much fun. So grateful to have been there . #johnscofield #mavisstaples #raycharles #drummers #drums #drummer #drumming #drum #music #drumlife #drummersofinstagram #drummerlife #drumset #bateria #drumstagram #musician #drumsticks #baterista #drumcover #drumsdrumsdrums #groove #stevehass #drumkit #instadrummer #drumsolo #drumuniversity #instadrums #drumfam #drummerslife taken in Valley Village by @hassbeat

Honored to have spent many years with some of the most influential vocal artists in American music history . It’s no accident though. Vocalists require certain skills from their drummers. You have listen to how they’re approaching the time and how they phrase , allowing them rhythmic freedom without compromising the groove or bpm. You need a sensitive touch while being able to deliver the full dynamic range of the drums. Know when stay out of the way and when to light a fire. Vast knowledge of styles , improvisation and of course, sight reading for symphony and big band dates. So many legacy artists are now doing symphony tours. These, are some of the concepts I teach those who want to play drums professionally. I also discuss studio drumming as well as stylistic versatility and concepts to help you improvise with fluidity and expand your musical vocabulary . If you want to learn about pedal technique or hyper focus on your body’s movements so you can play fast , that’s great . Go to a “drum yoga” instructor. 🤣All due respect to those who approach drumming as a physical art form. They have great technical ability . However, that won’t do anything for your gig career, and it has little to do with making music. More often than not, those who focus on technique and licks have difficulty understanding how to play the music, and struggle with taste, support and communication. I approach drumming as a musical art form. A week-long run in NYC straight to a one-night hit in LA with Richard Marx, playing his new jazz record and his classic pop/rock hits. I got to play with 2 great versatile bands on both coasts. Definitely a memorable career highlight. 🙏🏽 RichardMarx #LiveMusic #SessionDrummer #DrumLife #NYCtoLA #TourLife taken in The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel by @hassbeat

I was super lucky when Richard Hammond recommended me to Mike Ricchuiti to play for the great @pattiaustinofficial . This group was so versatile that we played Patti’s R&B and acoustic jazz trio gigs , where as in the past she used two different bands . #drummers #drums #drummer #drum #drumming #drumlife #music #drummersofinstagram #drummerlife #drumset #drumstagram #baterista #bateria #drumsticks #musician #drumuniversity #evansdrumheads #yamahadrums #sabiancymbals #vicfirth #skbcases #ultimateaers #pattiaustin taken in Los Angeles, California by @hassbeat
