I’ve lost count, here we go again. Mixing advice that will alter your brain chemistry and send me death threats

SAVE FOR LATER ā€¼ļø

as a sound engineer, it is crucial to hear the dynamic range of the mix. Loud volumes not only distorts that perception but also makes u deaf

It took me 4 years to finally hear compression and truly understand what compressing vocals, guitars, bass even means and why the pros do it in the first place. Knowing what I know now, I can tell how much you’ve trained your ears by the way you pick up on compression.

Balance is key. Find the balance between the elements. Sometimes that could be dulling the vocals.

I’m sorry but you can’t just tell me you’re a pro at this I’ve you’ve never mixed a song with over 25 tracks

Yup. Mastering is complex and simple at the same time that’s why it often seems like it’s ā€œjust louderā€

A disorganized person in any profession can’t be taken seriously unless they already have the accolades. Present professionally and be taken seriously.

Honestly I’ll even cut you a percentage for the plug

Literally can’t be that hard

Sorry (again) but you need to hear thisā€¼ļø

SAVE for later āœ…

this is one of the major signs I look for when approaching the end of my mix, is it smacking in low volume? Can I hear all the elements? Don’t skip this step as an engineer.

The better I got at mixing and mastering my music, the less time it took because I used plugins only to fix things I know needed fixing

Yeah; the mix buss should be mainly to glue sounds and hit a consistent volume. Having 10 plugins is not the best way to do that so deep in the mix

You have to have the confidence to tell your artist that it’s not you as an engineer rather the stems that were sent to you

That industry vocal take is largely based on the vocalists performance. Engineering it to sound good is only 50% of the work

So many engineers charge a low amount and normalizing these prices for work that takes hours to complete. Days even.

De esser is just a compressor that activates when the threshold detects abundance of frequencies at the programmed level

This one is huge, I don’t know why no one talks about using reference tracks. You’re not a Grammy nominated engineer that knows what something should sound like. Use references and level up ur mix instantly. Too many underground artists and producers don’t do this even before sending out a mix to an engineer

some positivity to restore balance. SAVE for later ā€¼ļø

To put into perspective, 100 is a lot dude

Literally prove me wrong. How is being an artist not the coolest thing?

Contrary to popular belief, being a musician now is 1000x easier than it ever was. Don’t let some unc on YouTube tell you that making music is a bad decision

I mean.. fr

Because once u finished a whole catalogue of art, you will be more inclined to present it, and a clearer vision for future projects.

WERE IN THE BEST TIME TO BE SOMEONE GREAT. TO LEAD THE NEW GEN.

The internet is vast, and now with AI. It’s more about putting in the work than actually knowing what to do. You got this.

Things I wish I could tell the 16yr old me who just started writing, producing and mixing music

This goes for a lot of underground producers, artists and engineers

I hope this helps, especially if you’re new to this

Save this post for later reminders ā€¼ļø

Unfortunately a lot of underground artists/producers/engineers fail because they simply just don’t put out their work.

Whether that be because of insecurity or other reasons, it’s just never going to work if you don’t post your music!

Okay. Pause.

Yes it’s okay to use them if you’re just starting out, but be mindful when you actually release music out to the world

Even the legends have bad days. Don’t let a shitty song/beat/project destroy your motivation. It’s probably just a weird day, step away

This could be the most important thing for a lot of us - underground artists especially.

You will ALWAYS be able to improve your project. Realistically 90% of your listeners won’t be able to tell the difference between version 4 and version 22. Those micro adjustments are destroying your momentum. Just put it out fr fr

I had a few songs that were complicated in terms of recording it and my mind space was so occupied by thinking about the labour it would cost to have myself record, mix and master the song that it just destroyed my motivation to even make the song.

Then an idea came to my mind - why not just rent some studio time and have an engineer worry about the tedious work? Boom instantly booked a 4-hour session and honestly it was such an exciting experience, focused all my energy on my performance. It was fun again. Definitely need to do that more.

It took me embarrassingly long to realize that the reason my beats and songs were sounding the same was because I was doing the same things day in and day out!

Sometimes you need to go on a hiatus and connect with things that drove inspiration to you in the first place. No shame in that. A lot of great producers, engineers and artists do this and come back better šŸ‘‘

Maybe it’s time for you?

Take a break. Re approach. There’s time. You’re young.

Going to be spilling alotttt more. Stay tuned ā€¼ļø by @hate6ix

I hope this one doesn’t cause as much controversy as my last one

These are tips I wish someone told me when I first started sound engineering.

Get a great mix and master by applying these to your work šŸ‘šŸ½

Not much to say here, there’s a clear difference between the two sample rates above. Plugins react differently and the master gets rendered differently. Better or worse? That’s for you to decide.

I hear a lot of mixes where the vocals sound too thin or too honky. Balance is key. A badly mixed vocal can quickly take out the energy of the performance.

I’m sorry but I’ll stop taking you seriously if I found out that you don’t reference the mix on different outputs/environments.

Artists (especially new ones) don’t understand technical concepts of mixing and mastering. The easiest way to bridge that gap is to ask the artist for some references.

Low frequencies in elements that don’t need to occupy the lows need to be EQ’d out to give the lows more space to pump. Sometimes a hi hat can have significant volume in the bass region which for the most part is unnecessary.

Knowing how sounds change as they get louder essentially is crucial for setting up the mix properly for the mastering phase. Don’t know how your mix should sound before a master is a sign of a low caliber engineer.

So many times I’ve outsourced mixes to a different engineer and they just add effects that were never mentioned or needed. Some Engineers (new ones) often mistake their job with doing creative work. If it’s not mentioned - it’s not your job to add creative elements like a beat stop or delays in an area.

Sorry but you need to hear it šŸ’Æ

Im being flooded with questions about mixing and mastering music. Here are some tips/advice that I think are overlooked by many underground artists or producers. Dw more detailed advice coming.

SAVE for later ā€¼ļøā€¼ļø

You could literally have the SonyC800 in your room but if you have terrible reflections and reverb in your environment, it’ll plague the whole recording. Expensive mic’s are sensitive. Must make sure the room you’re recording in is as quiet as possible šŸŽ¤

Professionals use professional gear. You can’t build a house using Walmart tools.

This should not be controversial. Think about it, the better your music sounds, the more people will interact with it. Not so hard to understand.

I used to think my speakers were the main reason my mixes were not sounding good until I actually got them and realized it’s just another output. The key is in understanding your output to the finest detail.

Mix in whatever stereo image you want. Period. Mixing in mono is not going to magically change your mix.

Please dial the reverb down. It does NOT sound good. It shows insecurity and unprofessionalism.

This is the single greatest tip I’ve ever received a few years ago. Listen to the song first and then decide what needs to happen. Don’t just ā€œlowpassā€ because you’re supposed to.

Artists/producers, listen to ur intuition. Underground/unsigned, it doesn’t matter. Your music is an expression of self. Don’t go to the studio doubting yourself, you believed once, you weren’t crazy. Everyone around u is crazy by @hate6ix
