En esta crónica-ensayo, Anayra Santory Jorge lee “In Minor Keys”, la exposición curada por Koyo Kouoh —primera curadora mujer africana en la historia de la Bienal de Venecia— desde la intersección de arte, colonialismo y trauma intergeneracional, y desde su propia posición como habitante de un archipiélago caribeño colonizado. La autora contrasta el despoblamiento y la crisis climática de Venecia con las dinámicas extractivas del turismo y el colonialismo en Puerto Rico, y parte de ese paralelo para leer obras de Sofía Gallisá Muriente, Natalia Lasalle-Morillo y Daniel Lind Ramos, presentes en la bienal. Deteniéndose en “Retiro”, video de Lasalle-Morillo realizado en colaboración con su madre Gloria, el texto propone una reflexión sobre el silencio emocional intergeneracional como estrategia de supervivencia colonial, y sobre la necesidad de nombrar el propio dolor —histórico y familiar— como condición para cualquier proyecto descolonizador genuino. In this essay-style chronicle, Anayra Santory Jorge examines “In Minor Keys”, the exhibition curated by Koyo Kouoh—the first African woman curator in the history of the Venice Biennale—through the lens of the intersection of art, colonialism, and intergenerational trauma, and from her own perspective as a resident of a colonized Caribbean archipelago. The author contrasts Venice’s depopulation and climate crisis with the extractive dynamics of tourism and colonialism in Puerto Rico and uses this parallel as a starting point to interpret works by Sofía Gallisá Muriente, Natalia Lasalle-Morillo, and Daniel Lind Ramos, featured in the Biennale. Focusing on “Retiro”, a video by Lasalle-Morillo created in collaboration with her mother Gloria, the text offers a reflection on intergenerational emotional silence as a strategy for colonial survival, and on the need to name one’s own pain—both historical and familial—as a prerequisite for any genuine decolonization project. by @hatoreina

“ultimas luces / last lights” by @hatoreina for september 2026 NicOtiNe digital live now >>>>> An empty home in Levittown, Puerto Rico is illuminated by projections of a doubly-exposed 16mm film, layering colonial histories on its walls. This short video is an epilogue to a body of work that the artist produced concerning this house, the Levittown neighborhood, and her grandmother, who lived and died here, and witnessed its transformation from a post-war middle-class dream into a dystopian, sprawling neighborhood and commercial area. After her death, the house was emptied and sold. This video was shot the night before the keys were handed over to the new owner as a way of inhabiting the space one last time, and bidding farewell.  watch the full video at the link in bio by @hatoreina

Nos complace compartir algunas imágenes de las obras e instalaciones de Sofía Gallisá Muriente @hatoreina presentadas en la 61ª Bienal de Venecia, como parte de Minor Keys, la Exposición Internacional curada por Koyo Kouoh. @labiennale Nos sentimos profundamente orgullosos de Sofía y de haber presentado varias de estas obras durante los pasados años en El Kilómetro, tanto en exposiciones como en ferias de arte. Ha sido un privilegio acompañar el desarrollo de una práctica artística tan rigurosa y necesaria. Bajo el título Observatorio de lagunas, Gallisá Muriente investiga las ausencias, silencios y fracturas de los archivos históricos de Puerto Rico. En lugar de intentar llenar esos vacíos, su trabajo propone habitarlos, entendiendo que la memoria también se construye a partir de la omisión, la incertidumbre y la imaginación. Entre las obras presentadas se encuentra Guaniquilla Luminosa (2023), compuesta por imágenes en Super 8 de una ensenada en Cabo Rojo, donde afloran formaciones geológicas que conservan fragmentos de una antigua corteza oceánica. En Últimas luces / Last Lights (2024), la artista proyecta películas de 16 mm de doble exposición sobre las paredes de la casa de su abuela fallecida, construyendo un archivo íntimo, inestable y parcialmente ficticio que evidencia cómo la memoria está atravesada por la selección, la omisión y la imaginación. Por su parte, Ciné Inútil / Useless Cinema I–IX (2023–2024) reúne fotogramas de películas realizadas por agentes de la policía durante la vigilancia de organizaciones de izquierda en Puerto Rico, revelando imágenes desenfocadas, sobreexpuestas y registros incompletos que ponen en evidencia las fisuras del propio aparato de vigilancia. Como escribe Marina Reyes Franco, autora del texto curatorial: “El fracaso del opresor, en manos de la artista, se reconoce como una pequeña victoria.” Felicitaciones, Sofía. Last April I participated in MoMA’s Forum on Contemporary Photography alongside a great group of speakers and a badass cellist. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have a 7 minute existential crisis about the current state of images in times of genocide and AI. I came out of the event with few answers and a lot of new questions but hopefully I was just opening a conversation. Looking forward to thinking about this more with others. Link to the video in my bio. ~~~ El pasado abril participé del Foro sobre fotografía contemporánea en el MoMA junto a un gran grupo de ponentes y un chelista espectacular. Agradezco la oportunidad de tener una crisis existencial de 7 minutos sobre el estado actual de las imágenes en tiempos de genocidio e IA. Salí del evento con pocas contestaciones y un montón de preguntas nuevas pero espero que solo sea el principio de una conversación. Puesta para pensar más sobre esto con otres. It’s the honor of my life to be a part of the beautiful convening that is In Minor Keys, by Koyo Kouoh, exhibiting works from my ongoing project Observatorio de Lagunas in the Venetian Lagoon. I’ve never been prouder to be in a show or in a group of artists. I’m still amazed that at the interior of this monumental art event it was possible to experience tender humanity, fierce solidarity and complicity that would give me a new sense of value in what I do, despite the swamp we labor in. This is in no small part thanks to the titanic work of beloveds @rashasalti @siddharthamitter @westvirginiababy @gabefeijoo and @neneperei who carried forward a curatorial project guided by deep love for our dead and reverence for dignified life. Grief work is memory work, community work and political work. It has the power to make us brave, bring us together, tune out the noise and access the core of human experience. Koyo is everywhere, and her spirit has led us all, even those like me who only met her through the love of her friends. My grandmother Maria Luisa is here too; her empty home in Levittown is layered with the history in the walls of the Arsenale. Palestine is here too; the memory of its martyrs and its glorious resistance anchoring us through action, presence and the vibrancy of a chorus of drones. Thank you for letting me carry your name and your work, @duaa.qishta, it was an honor. That I would be one of the first Puerto Rican women participating in the central exhibition of the Venice Biennale alongside my dearest @natalialassallem and @gmorillo2010 is unthinkable. This absence for 131 years must be named, but we are far from enough to correct it. May many more boricuas grace these walls in the future, guided by caring hands like us. Big love to Daniel Lind Ramos who should have been here long ago with so many others. A principio de mes, en fecha oportuna del natalicio del antillanista Ramón Emeterio Betances, @eeemergente publicó una versión en español del ensayo “Sobre las complejidades de la solidaridad caribeña: relatos de navegación, naufragio y resistencia” que escribí hace unos años junto a @hatoreina por invitación de la curadora Lisa Rosendehl y la Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art. Este fue mi primer texto coescrito —y abrió la compuerta a varios proyectos de coautoría que trabajé en estos últimos 5 años. Escribimos sobre los intentos, imposibilidades, realidades materiales y continuas aspiraciones de conectarnos a través del Mar Caribe a través de episodios relacionados a Silvano Lora, La Flexible, Tito Kayak y una flotilla de veleros.
