Hatrack Tune Of The Week. Stevie Wonder 'Black Man' (link in bio).
This week's choice ticks two boxes - an acknowledgement of the 50th anniversary of the release of 'Songs In The Key Of Life' and October being Black History Month (in the UK).
I can vividly remember the anticipation waiting for this album to be released. The release date was delayed several times, which seemed like agony to me. I had lapped up Stevie's four previous albums and thought them to be some of the greatest music I'd ever heard (still do!). When 'Songs In The Key Of Life' eventually hit the record stores, I remember feeling totally underwhelmed. To my ears, it should never have been a double album - it seemed bloated with sub-par material (Sir Duke, Isn't She Lovely). It could have been a phenomenal single album. Obviously, this is my opinion and I am clearly in the minority as many people laud it as Wonder's greatest achievement. However, there is one track on the record that is worthy of special mention and that is 'Black Man'. I can't think of too many songs that attempt to celebrate the contribution that Black men and women - and people of colour in general - have made to the world, so this song is fairly unique. Stevie should be cut some slack for his use of 'Yellow man' and 'Red man' as the world was a different place fifty years ago. What is more important is the overall message contained in the song. It's also pretty damn funky!
This week's tune is dedicated to those who made it to another excellent Hatrack Saturday Sessions. Love you all ❤️. And to those of you who didn't make it - love you all too! ❤️

Hatrack hits the Herbert tonight for our monthly celebration of the best soulful, funky and jazzy music that money can buy. It's all on vinyl - exactly as the good lord intended. Martin McGowan is our guest DJ - he's partial to a bit of Northern Soul. Mrs Hatrack will be there - you should be too! KTF 👊

Give yourself a break from the 'My 9 Albums' challenge and head along to @lord_herbert_pub for the next Hatrack extravaganza (Saturday 17th October, from 7pm). Our DJ guest-spot sees the return of Martin McGowan. Martin is an absolute soul fanatic, with a particular liking for Northern Soul. His energy and enthusiasm for the music radiates from the record decks. By rights, we should be charging you a small fortune to have the opportunity to listen to music of this calibre - but NO! - you can enjoy it for free! Plus, you can feast yourselves on pizzas and burgers from the on-site @toledo_pizzeria_napoletana and, of course, quench your thirst with the fine selection of beverages from the Herbert's well-stocked bar. Regulars and newbies are more than welcome! See you on Saturday 👀

Hatrack Tune Of The Week. Donny Hathaway 'Voices Inside (Everything Is Everything)'. Link in the bio.
In his tragically short life, Donny Hathaway recorded just three studio albums, a couple of live sessions and a duet album with Roberta Flack. Although far from prolific, Hathaway left us with some of the best soul music ever recorded. His fans place him right up there with the likes of Marvin and Curtis (no surnames required!). This week's tune is the title track from his 1970 debut album. Imagine buying that record on it's initial release, dropping the needle on the first track and hearing that incredible bass guitar intro (Willie Weeks?). Phew! Sadly, the content of the song (Voices Inside) may have been Hathaway expressing some of the mental turmoil that would affect him through to his untimely death at the age of just 33. But, the music lives on. Incidentally, there is an amazing 13 minute version of this very song on the esential 'Donny Live!' album. My advice? Get your credit card out and buy a copy now! There's also a pretty good cover version by Earth Wind & Fire, on one of their early albums. If this sort of music connects with you, then here's the good news - the next Hatrack Saturday Session at @lord_herbert_pub is just a few days away. Come on down and check out our special guest DJ - Northern Soul specialist, Martin McGowan. KTF👊

Jumping on this little bandwagon of creating a poster of my nine favourite albums. None of this is written in stone - this is how it pans out at this period of time. No Donny, no Aretha, no Womack - I could go on. Should be my favourite 900 albums. Anybody want to pitch in with their choices?

Our favourite time of the month approaches. Hatrack Saturday Sessions - 17th October at @lord_herbert_pub. Our guest jock slot goes to Martin McGowan. Martin is a founding member of the Kent Soul Club and will be making his second appearance as a Hatrack special guest. Expect to hear a heavy dose of Northern Soul along with bags of energy. Either side of Martin's slot, we will be raiding our record racks to bring you the most eclectic mix of soulful sounds. 'Do one thing - but do it well'. Niiiiice.

A different take on Tune Of The Week this time around.
Peter Marsh 'Caught The Rhythm' (link to video in the bio).
This is a promo video for a new song by our good mate, Peter Marsh. As well as being a very fine song in its own right - the accompanying clip uses footage filmed at one of our earlier Hatrack sessions at the Lord Herbert. The clip has been expertly edited by Anne McIvor to sync perfectly with Pete's song. The album from which the song comes, 'Soul Searching 2', is available on Peter Marsh's Spotify channel.
