🎩 HATTEMBER 2026 | PARADOX & ILLUSION
🏆 1st Place – Millinery

✨ Artist Statement

Designed for the Paradox & Illusion theme, this striking headpiece uses Racello braid to create a dynamic “trompe-l’oeil” effect.

Inspired by the visual paradox of structured form versus fluid movement, the woven trim appears to escape and tumble away from the crown in a continuous, gravity-defying loop.

Crafted as a side-swept fedora set on a striking angle, the piece seamlessly blends classic millinery craftsmanship with modern, sculptural ribbon work.

The headband was made using a 57cm dome.

✨ A beautiful illusion of movement, structure and craftsmanship — and a very worthy 1st Place! taken in Embellish Atelier-Couture Millinery by @hattember

Kam Wong 2026 — Against the Current 🐟

This hat explores the transformation of traditional millinery through the deconstruction of the conventional brim. Rather than sitting on the wearer’s head, the brim is broken apart and reimagined as an organic structure, creating a suspended space where form, movement and illusion coexist.

Millinery wire defines the skeletal framework, while crinoline forms the foundation. Braid is wrapped around the structure, introducing rhythm and texture, while delicate bridal tulle drapes across the remaining brim, softening the architecture and creating an ethereal veil between the wearer and the surrounding space.

Suspended within this seemingly weightless environment are nine embroidered sardines, their bodies shimmering with iridescent sequins that suggest the reflective scales of fish beneath the surface of water.

Seven fish swim in one direction, while two move against the current. Their opposing movement creates a visual paradox — a school of fish appearing to swim through air, while their directional tension suggests both unity and resistance.

Clear crystal beads represent bubbles, suggesting the presence of water where there is none. The result is an underwater world suspended above the ground — fish swimming with bubbles, yet without water.

The sardines are deliberately suspended rather than contained, challenging the traditional relationship between hat, wearer and space.

Through the collision of traditional millinery techniques with an unconventional organic form, Against the Current invites the viewer to question the boundary between the hat and the illusion. by @hattember

Hatember 2026 — Paradox & Illusion

“Give it up for MC”

🎨 Artist Bio

Growing up with always doing something creative, using found objects to tell stories within my pieces, I would always try to push the limits with what I could do with what I had on hand, always wanting to learn and create more. This year has moved me to push my boundaries and skill level to places I never imagined I would go.

My world shifts between millinery, costume, props and food. All intertwining within each other to what is my curiously creative life.

✨ Artist Statement

When the theme of Paradox and Illusion came to be, my mind went straight to Escher. As a lover of art, my Year 12 Art teacher gave me a book of Escher’s illustrations, and I was instantly hooked.

Later, in Illustration and Design class at university, I used him as inspiration for my own tessellated graphic art project.

I have tried to hero the kit materials, and pay homage to some of his works within this piece. Materials used in a non-common way, breaking away from the paradox of what is a “hat” and creating an illusion of floating art. by @hattember

Artist Bio

I am a novice milliner with two years of experience and no formal training, having developed my skills through the Millinery Retreat and Hat Academy. Living a country farming lifestyle, I usually gravitate towards practical, ‘real hats’, so this competition piece was a wonderfully frivolous departure and a fun creative challenge that pushed me outside my comfort zone.

As a child of the 1970s, the orange theme of my kit immediately resonated with the colours and energy of my childhood, while the flamboyance of the glam rock era — particularly the unforgettable Ziggy Stardust — inspired the spirit of the piece.

It has been a joyful opportunity to embrace a little more theatre, colour and creativity in my millinery journey.

Artist Statement

Ziggy Stardust, icon of the ’70s, is renowned for his flamboyant theatrical style, striking graphic makeup and iconic fashion, which inspired my entry — particularly his quintessential zigzag eye makeup and suave knotted cravat.

The biot feathers were the hardest component for me to include in my project — but I incorporated them as bursts of camera flash bulbs.

Materials Used

I used the additional materials of gold metallic sinamay, black tulle wrap, 18 gauge wire, orange sinamay binding, blue sinamay, purple metallic ribbon, purple netting, cotton thread and glue.

🧡💙💜 A wonderfully theatrical take on the ’70s, bringing together colour, creativity and the unmistakable spirit of Ziggy Stardust. by @hattember

❤️ “K is for Kylie – Padam”

Inspired by the resilience, showmanship and unmistakable style of Australian icon Kylie Minogue, this bold red piece takes its inspiration from her Tension Tour and the iconic Padam Padam era.

The red pleather-covered brim, “K” styling, sparkling crystals, veiling and knotted biot feathers bring a touch of Kylie’s glamour and showgirl spirit to the design.

A charity logo pin on the back is a personal nod to Kylie’s breast cancer journey and recovery.

✨ A celebration of Kylie — bold, glamorous, resilient and unapologetically Australian. by @hattember

Wearing a hat is often a conversation starter, with people frequently stopping to compliment my look.

I have been learning the art of millinery for several years, allowing me to create unique accessories that reflect my personality and creativity. My career as a physicist is serious, analytical and logical — which contrasts beautifully with the creativity, freedom and self-expression that millinery gives me.

For me, wearing and creating hats provides an opportunity to step outside the logical world and embrace my own style and personality.

🌿 The Inspiration

The Victorian era offered an incredible variety of hat styles, from functional designs to elaborate expressions of personal flair and social status. This piece draws inspiration from an elegant Victorian lady taking a leisurely promenade through the park.

Victorians used flowers to convey secret messages and express feelings that could not always be spoken aloud.

This hat features:

🌿 Bells of Ireland – symbolising good luck
🤍 Lily of the Valley – representing a return to happiness
💜 Lilac Roses – meaning enchantment

Together, these flowers create a message of hope, happiness and wonder.

This symbolism is particularly meaningful to me after experiencing a personally difficult year. Through this piece, I wanted to capture the feeling of moving forward with renewed hope and allowing beauty and happiness to find their way back into my life.

💜 A beautiful story of resilience, renewal and finding joy again through creativity. by @hattember

When I received my fabric, I had a completely different idea in mind… but the beautiful lavender colour changed everything!

The colour immediately reminded me of the little old ladies who would dye their hair lavender or purple — and made me think of my grandmother.

My grandmother was an Irish migrant who moved to remote Australia and settled there. She made her own beautiful clothes, took great pride in her appearance and always dressed impeccably.

This piece is inspired by her — her femininity, creativity and enduring resilience — and by the women of her era who worked hard, travelled far from home and created beautiful lives for themselves.

The vintage styling and lavender tones are a little reminder of those freshly permed, coloured hairstyles of so many women just like her. 💜

A celebration of family, femininity, resilience and the women who inspire us.

✨ HATTEMBER 2026 – SUBMISSION ✨

Category: Paradox & Illusion
Milliner: Alana English

Artist Bio

As a milliner, I am drawn to the balance between structure and spontaneity, creating pieces that are both sculptural and expressive.

I enjoy exploring traditional millinery techniques while allowing texture, movement and unexpected materials to influence the design.

My work is inspired by the relationship between form, line and proportion. I particularly enjoy the transformative nature of millinery — the way a hat or headpiece not only completes an outfit, but creates a sense of personality.

It gives me great pleasure to create something beautifully crafted and distinctly individual. ✨

✨ HATTEMBER 2026 ✨

Artist Statement

My design explores paradox through the contrasting qualities of line, shape and form.

The structured sweeping curve of the hat creates a strong and controlled silhouette, while the fine radiating fibres of the crin introduce a sense of movement and fragility.

The opposing lines allow the design to appear both disciplined and untamed — balancing structure with spontaneity. by @hattember
