Seram Baru 🌀🌊🏝️

Sun, songs & stories — on September 21, five new outdoor artworks were unveiled in Leiden’s @singelpark as part of Sankofa, a three-year art route reflecting on colonial history.

So proud to share that my work “Seram Baru” is part of this journey 💛

The opening was beautifully led by @debsterpics (Debbie Helaha) and the amazing voices of Bunga Tjenkeh from Leiden and beyond 🎶

✨ Meet James Noya (@hatutamelen), one of the makers supported by our Talent Development Grant in 2024.

As a self-taught craftsman, James explores Moluccan symbolism and craftsmanship through wood engraving. His work bridges past and present, connecting different cultures and communities. With the @awarenessmoluccanidentity collective, he revitalizes traditional crafts while giving them contemporary meaning. His piece ‘Salawaku’ – a reinterpretation of a traditional Moluccan shield – was acquired by Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 2023. ‘By learning about the craft and symbolism, I feel more connected to my ancestors. I can give these objects my own meaning by acquiring a better understanding of the symbolism.’

Want to know more about James’ work? Find him at the Portiersloge during @dutchdesignweek, where he joins other 2024 talents in ‘Stimuleringsfonds presents talent’. And, make sure not to mis his ‘meet the maker’ session on Tuesday October 22 at 14:00 🔥

Meet the artist: @hatutamelen

Roots: Hulaliu, Pulau Haruku, Maluku Tengah (Midden-Molukken)

Opening:

📅: Zaterdag 5 september
🕐: 15.30 - 18.00 (inloop 15.00 uur)

Timelapse – Root, Flourish and Shine

What begins as a blank wall in the museum café soon comes alive with color, movement, and meaning. Commissioned by @wereldmuseum.rotterdam , I had the honor of designing this mural—and bringing it to life became a true family effort.

With a “normal” office job during the week, I have to make every creative moment count. Over 3.5 days, this wall transformed piece by piece, with every brushstroke shaped by focus, energy, and the helping hands of the people closest to me.

I feel incredibly blessed and grateful for my wife, kids, and close family friends, who make it possible for me to create on this scale. Without their support, a project like this would easily take 5 or 6 days.

But the greatest reward goes beyond finishing the mural. We created memories together—inside a museum, surrounded by culture, while planting a few cultural seeds of our own. How cool is that?

Special thanks to my wife @jessica_manuhutu, my daughters Syliña & Elayza, and my brother from another mother @omar_yasha for lending their time, energy, and creativity, and for helping turn this project into something we could share.

And thank you to @ohkaymoy for curating and commissioning this piece on behalf of the museum, and to @molukkersaandemaas for inviting me to speak about it during the Suara Maluku event.

Art may begin with one person’s vision, but it truly flourishes through collaboration. Take a moment to appreciate the hands, hearts, and shared memories behind every finished piece.

Salawaku, Active Protection through Compassion

After a short resting period in storage, the Salawaku may finally shine again in @stedelijkmuseum in Amsterdam. It’s now on display on the 2nd floor in room 1.10.

The Salawaku was purchased by Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam after it was first exhibited in the exhibition “When Things Are Beings” in 2023 curated by @amandapinatih and @brittesloothaak , to whom I always be grateful.

“Salawaku, Active Protection through Compassion is a contemporary interpretation that highlights the power of the Salawaku, a narrow shield originating at the Maluku islands. The front of the shield is usually painted or inlaid with small pieces of shell in a pattern of personal significance to the owner or to their family’s social status or clan. Some salawaku’s also provide spiritual protection, security and prosperity.

In this work Hatutamelen has simplified the front of the Salawaku shield to accentuate its invisible forces rather than its physical strength. The mother-of-pearl inlaid sun represents light shining towards the viewer. The forces emanating from the surface are intended to counteract ill intent, transforming it into gentleness and compassion and preventing any need for conflict.

The woodcarvings on the back of the shield represent knowledge and power. The exact meaning of the symbols in the design is known only to the owner. By hiding them from direct view, Hatutamelen reminds the viewer that bearers of indigenous knowledge owe no explanation to outsiders.”

Shout out to my @awarenessmoluccanidentity family and my big brother Tihamanue for al the inspiration.

In 2024, my wife @jessica_manuhutu and I collaborated on this land art installation for the outdoor museum at the @festivalhongerigewolf in Groningen.

Jessica created a life-sized eagle from sticks and leaves, soaring above a mountain topped with a rooted tree stump. A spiral of reeds branches into three directions, referencing the sacred Mount Nunusaku and its three rivers.

Made entirely from natural materials gathered on site, the work was designed to eventually return to nature.

The mountain and spiral became the starting point for my later monumental artwork Seram Baru, created for the outdoor exhibition Sankofa in Leiden.

Here I am working on some finishing touches to a hair comb that can also be worn as a pendant.

I haven’t decided yet whether I will add more woodcarving or apply some inlays, or perhaps both. What do you think?
