𝔉𝔢𝔯𝔞𝔩 ℌ𝔢𝔞𝔯𝔱 is yours. this song is one of the closest to my heart i’ve ever made. i’ve been sitting on it for years waiting for the right collaborators to help me bring such a personal, tender song to life. i am forever grateful that @nick.nooodle came into my life. our close friendship and her incredible emotional openness truly allowed me to release this heartbreak i’d held onto for years in the raw yet sweet way i’d always hoped it could be recorded. this is my first song ever released that was co-produced by another woman <3

some of you may have heard this song on one of my tours over the past couple years. i wanted the final recording to capture the spirit of those acoustic performances as much as possible, so we kept the production very simple and recorded most of the instruments live together as a band.

thank you forever to my wonderful band @grant_harr @davidmcinness & @nick.nooodle , to my other incredible co-producer @cowboylansky , to @dylanthom @debourbon @richard.pichura and everyone else who had a hand in bringing this song to life so beautifully, and to @mark.a.needham and @howieweinbergmastering for turning our raw recordings into the music we can all hear today.

last year after the spellbound tour ended in new york, i spent a few days up in a tiny town on the coast of maine that captured my heart. while i was there, with no specific purpose, i created a little map in my mind of places that struck me: an abandoned house with crooked windows left hanging battered by winter storms, an old lobsterman’s dock, a sweet little cove going out into the sea… a year later, @lazyomelet and i were struggling to find a location to create a world for feral heart that could be dreamy, dark, sweet and gothic all at once ~~ like found footage from a long lost summer love.

before i knew it we were on a flight back to maine with nothing but an old camcorder, a tripod, a single battery-powered light and two dresses to bring feral heart’s world of bittersweet nostalgia and beautiful decay to life.

when i recorded “feral heart” i always envisioned ghosts dancing to it together… the idea captured my imagination and quickly became the only way i could fathom to represent the feeling of loving someone so far gone they’re practically an apparition.

for the longest time, i wasn’t sure how we’d go about this when we made the visualizer for the song. occasionally there was talk of dipping our toes into digital effects for the first time, but as it turns out, all we needed was a dark new moon night, a lobsterman’s dock in maine, and a single battery-powered light.
