I'm over the moon to be bringing On Foot: sensing carnival to London for its debut this August as a two-part series supported by @siobhandavies

Following previous sharings in Barcelona and Brussels with @africamoment, this cultural somatic practice invites us to experience carnival more deeply through movement, rhythm and embodied knowledge.

Rooted in African and African diasporic movement traditions, Black cultural knowledge and my ongoing artistic research, we'll use moving meditation, stillness, dance and collective reflection to explore the symbolic and literal role of the feet in carnival.

Together, we'll experience carnival as an embodied way of knowing - listening deeply to the body, sensing through the feet, and discovering how movement carries culture, memory, relationship and joyful resistance.

Expect to walk, chip, skank, jump up, wiine and dance!!

Whether you're a lifelong carnival
lover, carnivalista or completely new and simply curious, you're welcome.

👣Step into carnival from the ground up👣

For me, Black History Month isn´t purely about looking, back it’s something we practice. (And by we, I mean those of us living in black bodies).

We practice in our bodies, through our foods, dances, music and simply by being together, sharing stories, challenges and victories.

Carnival holds Black history as a lived knowledge where joy is resistance and the body is living archive.

As part of this month, I’m leading
BBC: Black British Cadences — A Pulse Between Worlds.

In this workshop series on 21 & 22 February we´ll be exploring Black British and Afro-diasporic Carnival lineages, as part of a residency hosted by @vooduness

This space is for people with black or brown bodies who want to move with history as a living and vibrant force.

🖤 Registration is open now and you can claim your fully subsidised space in the bio

⏳ Closes 13 February

👣 On Foot: Sensing Carnival is a collective, immersive experience where movement and sound come alive together. Guided by Hawah Bunduka, participants explore the dialogue between the feet and the earth, creating a living soundscape inspired by Afro-diasporic carnivals. This decolonial practice invites you to feel the heartbeat of carnival through the body and the senses, reimagined in the contemporary British-Caribbean context.

🚀Africa Moment has brought this inspiring concept to art venues and community centres across Europe, including the renowned Centre d’Arts Santa Mònica @centredartssantamonica Centre Civic @cclasagrera_labarraca in Barcelona and La Raffinerie - Charlerois Danse in Brussels @charleroidanse

👉🏾On Foot: Sensing Carnival continues in 2026, evolving and expanding its reach to redefine how we experience this globally celebrated event.

📩Contact us at hola@africamoment.org for more information or to bring the project to your city.

ℹ️ Hawah Bunduka @hawahsambafro is a transdisciplinary artist, researcher, and facilitator exploring the intersections of social justice, healing, and liberation. Her work weaves together performance, sonic experimentation, and community processes through a decolonial, Afro-diasporic lens. Rooted in embodied research, her practice invites collective reflection on memory, belonging, and transformation.

@africaisinthefuture, @hawahsambafro hosted her dance and somatic workshop “On Foot: Sensing Carnival” in collaboration with @africamoment .

In this video, she shares how humour shapes her artistic practice - where joy becomes resistance, memory becomes movement, and Carnival becomes a practice of optimism and self-love in the face of colonial oppression. 💫

A moment from our series #AnaesthesiaOfTheHeart, bringing people together and creating a space for joy, liberation and healing through dancing. 🎶🎉 by @hawahsambafro

Last Friday, the workshop “On Foot: Sensing Carnival” took place as part of @africaisinthefuture and in collaboration with @africamoment. Together with transdisciplinary artist @hawahsambafro the participants were exploring and reflecting to walk, move, and feel the rhythms of Carnival beyond the parade…
Through embodied practice, the workshop invited to sense Carnival as both a celebration and an act of resistance – a place where community, memory and joy intertwine.
