Before it became Foster Botanical Garden, this place was already a garden with a story.

Its story stretches across more than a century and through the lives of three people who each played a role in establishing, nurturing and preserving it.

Dr. William Hillebrand leased the land from Queen Kalama and established his home and garden here. Mary Elizabeth Mikahala Robinson Foster later became the owner, nurturing the garden before eventually bequeathing her home and garden to the City and County of Honolulu. Dr. Harold Lyon would later oversee, develop and expand the garden.

Their stories come together in The Beginning of a Garden, a living-history performance written by Hawaiian playwright Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl.

Audiences walk through Foster Botanical Garden to meet costumed role-players portraying Hillebrand, Foster and Lyon—experiencing more than 100 years of history in the place where much of that history unfolded.

What does The Queen’s Hospital have to do with the beginning of Foster Botanical Garden?

In 1850, German physician Dr. William Hillebrand arrived in Hawaiʻi. He would become the first physician at The Queen’s Hospital—but another part of his life would help establish what we know today as Foster Botanical Garden.

Hillebrand leased land from Queen Kalama, where he developed a garden and introduced and cultivated plants. That land would eventually become the genesis of Foster Botanical Garden.

His story is one of three brought to life in The Beginning of a Garden, a living-history performance written by Hawaiian playwright Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl.

Rather than sitting in a theater, audiences walk through Foster Botanical Garden, meeting costumed role-players portraying three people whose lives span more than a century of the garden’s history: Dr. William Hillebrand, Mary Elizabeth Mikahala Robinson Foster and Dr. Harold Lyon.

Celebrating the next generation of Hawaiian historians.

Earlier this year, Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī Coalition was honored to support the inaugural Yuklin Aluli Award through Hawaiʻi History Day, recognizing an outstanding student documentary or performance focused on Hawaiian history.

The first recipient is Ren Aragaki of Waiākea Intermediate School, whose documentary To Provide in Perpetuity: Kenneth Brown and the Queen’s Health Systems explores an important chapter of Hawaiʻi's history.

The award honors Yuklin Kalanihukiheionāmoku Aluli, a trailblazing attorney, advocate for Native Hawaiian rights, and central figure in the Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī Coalition whose legacy of service continues to inspire.

This Saturday, Ren's award-winning documentary will be among the student films featured at the Hawaiʻi History Day Student Documentary Video Showcase.

Saturday, September 12
10:30 AM–12:30 PM
King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center

Come support our student historians and experience Hawaiʻi's history through the research and storytelling of a new generation.

Registration encouraged. Walk-ins welcome as space allows.
