Väsen & Hawktail is out now!

This release is a collaboration between Padiddle Records and Olov Johansson Musik. Here are the liner notes written by Robert Simonds of NorthSide Records:

The music of Väsen is foundational to the members of Hawktail. They avidly followed (and played) it as teenagers, and then as they moved through their music education and early professional careers. Encountering these young musicians at festivals, Väsen quickly recognized and appreciated the talents and clever musical inventiveness of Hawktail. Aspirations to collaborate rarely advance beyond the idea stage: “let’s try to do something together sometime!”

But in this instance an application by Väsen to the Swedish Arts Council resulted in funding for two collaborative tours (one each in Sweden and the U.S.), which laid the groundwork for yet more touring and a week of recording in Sweden. Let’s hope it’s just the beginning of a long and fruitful musical relationship.

This set, honed by those first tours, combines original tunes already established in each of the band’s repertoires (but newly arranged for this 5-piece ensemble), with freshly composed music for the collaboration. Usually the tune is a polska, that infinitely variable 3-beat rhythm that permeates Swedish traditional music, and universally just gets under your skin. In the hands of these five enormously talented acoustic musicians, it’s like mining for joy.

-Robert Simonds

When I decided to take All My Friends on the road, I knew I needed to have a small ensemble that would be able to get inside the heart and soul of the songs. Hawktail was a natural choice. Reuniting with my Crooked Still bandmate Brittany Haas, along with my comrades Paul Kowert on bass and Jordan Tice on guitar, has been sheer joy. Together, we took these songs apart and put them back together again with new life and different shades of meaning. We also resurrected an old song of mine from 2004, one that I had recorded in the Hudson Valley with my old band Sometymes Why. Brittany wrote a gorgeous fiddle tune to go with it, and it became “Middle/The River that Runs Both Ways”. It’s the perfect addition to the five songs from All My Friends.

Listen to our first single “America, Come” now! Aoife O’Donovan & Hawktail Play All My Friends is out August 16 🤍💜💛 by @hawktailband

We won a Swedish Manifest Award with “Väsen & Hawktail”! Olov and Mikael were predictably cute accepting the award (although I can’t understand anything they said).
