THROWBACK THURSDAY

In the Melbourne suburb of Norwood in 2003, a few carloads of us were sessioning this school and worked our way from a smaller mellow rail over to this biggie. Hayden Golder @haydengolder snapped a few shots on the day and it would be over a decade and a half later that a bunch of us Melbourne bladers recieved care packages from him involving prints of images that he’d shot of us on film, and mine included this topacid to fakie which was the first time I’d seen this photo. The rail is kinda thick and rather steep but it’s most notable attribute is that it’s quite a high one, and in 2003 I was wearing a pair of K2 Nemesis and Fiziks suspension frames with a flat setup of wheels; just about the heaviest inline skate setup ever. Right after the topacid I managed to put down a fishbrain to fakie that was filmed by filmmaker Matt Raimondo @mattraimondo. Prior to a career in tourism cinematography the legendary lensman was responsible for the ā€œ3216ā€ VHS video series that was so integral to Australian bladers seeing what other bladers around the nation were doing in the early 2000’s. He released a few random vids prior to his four issues of 3216, along with the Australian USD team video and one that documented a talent-heavy tour through far North Queensland, entitled Top End Tour, that he released on DVD. My fishbrain featured in a ā€œBonus Footageā€ section of that DVD along with whatever other clips he had from his various travels that he had sitting on his hard drive at the time, and it’s the only trick I ever had in one of his films. He spelled my name wrong but that’s ok, many do. I was just chuffed to have made it into a video that was available in shops which was a new milestone for me.

So anyway, a few months ago the latest edition of ONE blade mag hit skate shop shelves around the world and let me tell you, if you like Martin Gade’s tricks, Hayden Golder’s photography and my ramblings then by golly have we got a winning piece of journalism for you.

The only way to see the pics, tricks and words is by picking up a copy from a stockist - naturally I recommend my local, Bayside Blades, who’ve been slinging magazines and the like for over twenty years now. I’ve been penning blading articles for the papers since before I was a teenager and was chuffed to be involved in Martin’s feature and totally stoked to see the man of steel get the spotlight he’s earned. Of course there’s a whole bunch of great material within the pages of Issue 27 that isn’t to be missed including pieces on and by some of the most significant names in the game, so get yours.

Long live print!

P.S. No I did not crinkle the page; it’s printed to look that way, alright? Alright.

THROWBACK THURSDAY

In a valley in regional Victoria is a treehouse called Megaranch. There’s only one other permanent ramp of such shape and size, at the Californian home of some dude named Bob Burnquist. What makes @megaranch so special is that the family who built it at their home open their front gate numerous times a year for members of the public to live their dreams. I’d been before to film friends, once dropping in on the quarter pipe, and though transition ramps are not at the core of my interest when it comes to my own skating, this was the first visit that I was healthy enough to have a crack at the whole thing. I was there attending the annual Mega Inline Jam contest as a non-competitor and skated on the warmup day with aspirations of a straight air over the launch and a stall on the quarter.

It all starts with tower 55 feet/16.8 metres high (about 5 storeys) that sends you into a ramp that launches you across a couple of different distances; I went with the shorter 42 foot/12.8 metre option. On the other side of that is a quarter-pipe 27 feet/8.2 metres tall (3 storeys). The bearings in my wheels were dirty and challengingly slow but I did manage to backside stall the coping and clear the launch with a grab I’ve never seen done on anything by anyone other than myself and vert blading icon Cesar Mora @cesarmora.10. It involves one hand behind the same side leg and reaching the opposite foot with your fingers across the laces, over the edge of the outside of the sole of the skate. In skate jargon it’s a stale weddle (ā€œweddleā€ previously being referred to as a ā€œmuteā€), a combo Cesar and I jokingly named after ourselves as the ā€œces-pullā€.

Shout out to Daryl Parrott @daryl_parrott87 for landing the trick of the day first try without even telling me what he was about to do, Jerry Fangster for his assessment; ā€œHe sent it on Friday and he landed on Sundayā€, photographer Hayden @haydengolder, and Nick Petropoulos @revinbanchee79 for establishing the Megaranch-inline/quad relationship and coordinating the event each summer. Most thanks go to the Wilson family for dreaming big in the first place and letting us play in their treehouse.
