We’re delighted that our recent-completed modernist retrofit - Hampstead Town House - has been shortlisted in the AJ Retrofit & Re-use awards 2026 in the private homes over £800k category.

Part, faithful-restoration and part, radical re-ordering, the home optimises the potential for thermal upgrades and re-use of modernist materials on a stamp-sized footprint.

We enjoyed our presentation to the judges earlier this month and are looking forward to the winner being announced in September.

Hayhurst & Co – Summer Outing – Peter Aldington’s Turn End

We feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to visit Peter & Margaret Aldington’s seminal House, Turn End in the Chiltern’s village of Haddenham on Wednesday this week.

Built in the early 1960s, the estate comprises ‘Three Houses and a – quite extraordinary - Garden’ all Grade II listed (including the garden) with Turn End being Grade II*listed.

Italian hill-top from the outside, a Camden-esque 1960s expressed constructional modernism on the inside, the house is an essay in dwelling. A rich spatial anatomy, layered thresholds between spaces in plan and section and a sense of scale of space internally, and extending externally, which belies its relatively modest and ergonomic plan.

The beam that extends through the blockwork wall only to provide a ledge for a nick-nack an act of joy. The space left at the end of the living room for a plant to be lit from above – like the spatial reverse of a hearth – delightful.

It would be too simplistic to say that it is a house with a relationship with its garden. The garden is the house and the house the garden and the garden comprised of rooms with visual connections and thresholds as rich as the house.

Several days later, still in awe. Also humbled to learn that because of Peter’s ill-health earlier this year and passing in April, this is the first and only time the house will be opened to a group this year.

Great to see the @ft_houseandhome article on our Hampstead Town House in print today.

It’s a great spread that really showcases our modernist retrofit: spatially bold, materially sympathetic and creating a renewed home for the houses next 50+ years.

When architect Nick Hayhurst of @hayhurstandco was commissioned to renovate this Hampstead home, the brief was anything but straightforward. ⁠
⁠
Built in 1970 on a tiny wedge-shaped infill plot, the house had a dramatic modernist facade — but the visual interest stopped at the door.⁠
⁠
Now the interiors, filled with sweeping lines and rich timbers, live up to the promise made by the eccentric facade and continue its mid-century aesthetic. ⁠

Roll up, roll up… if you are in Somerset today come visit our public engagement stall at Collett Park Day in Shepton Mallet and say hello to Jon and Laura.

We are keen to hear thoughts and ideas for the park’s new community space, cafe and public facilities we are designing for Shepton Mallet Town Council along with @churchmanthornhillfinch (Landscape), @greengaugebec (Sustainability) and @giraffeengineering (Structures).

We are also exhibiting the ideas of Year 4 pupils from St Paul’s Primary School, who have developed ideas for how the development can support and improve local biodiversity through new habitats and improved landscape - a few of the highlights shown here!

We’re delighted to have won the competition to design a new café hub for Collett Park in Shepton Mallet, Somerset

The project aims to create an inclusive, welcoming and active travel-focused gateway to the historic park. Key aims include supporting the wider town’s regeneration and responding to significant recent growth in visitor numbers and local residents. The project will also include modern public toilets, improved cycle facilities and storage for park maintenance.

Our proposal aims to retain the trees and many of the existing boundary walls which will be topped with a new umbrella-like roof supported on a timber structure that references the town’s Grade II-listed Medieval ‘shambles’ market stall.

We will be developing the project to RIBA Stage 3 by autumn this year.

Great to be back at Ecclesbourne Primary School in Croydon last week and to see the Reading Room we completed in 2012 is still holding up strong.

Clad in off white tiles the room is seen as an ivory coloured tower: a space where any child can lose themselves in a good book.

Our next intervention opposite the Reading Room coming this summer…

Hayhurst & Co is looking for a Part 2 architectural assistant to join its London studio.

We are currently working on a wide range of exciting projects including one-off homes, community and cultural projects around the UK.

Upon joining, you will be working on a number of projects at various RIBA stages with a focus on one-off homes in the first instance.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for sustainability and craftmanship and be curious about the use of materials. They will have excellent communication skills and a desire to contribute to a creative, team-working environment.

Hayhurst & Co is an equal opportunities employer and a member of the London Practice Forum. We support career progression with mentoring support, project experience and assistance for Part 3 studies.

Key requirements:

1. RIBA Part 2 or equivalent qualification
2. a minimum of one year of practice-based experience (either post-part 1 or post-part 2)
3. strong design and presentation skills with an interest in materials and the environment
4. strong communication skills: able to write clear client-facing emails, confident presenting to small groups, able to articulate and discuss design ideas
5. ideally experienced in the use of Vectorworks, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp and Enscape
6. ability to work well in a team excellent time management, organisation, planning and attention to detail 7. ability to think creatively and problem-solve through design

The salary will be within our Part 2 salary range of £32,500.00–£37,000.00 per annum depending on experience, plus company benefits. The role is full-time, studio-based with a start in late-April/early-May.

It was an honour to be at our Edith Neville Primary School yesterday morning for the launch of The London Assembly’s report ‘A London for every child: Reversing the city’s declining child population’

The report was written by the cross-party Economy, Culture and Skills Committee led by @hinabokharild and with evidence gathering from fellow architect @dinahbornat and commentary from Edith Neville Headteacher Ruby Nasser, Susie Dye and Katherine Hill.

The report focuses on how we can put children at the heart of what we do from planning strategically, through to design and management of spaces and is central to all level of development in London. I was thrilled that Edith Neville was chosen as the venue for the launch and to give a tour of the school after the delegates including Green Party Leader @greenpartyzack afterwards.

Hampstead Town House

Designed at a time when energy use and thermal performance was not as considered as it is today, the house comprised an uninsulated concrete frame supporting an external brick leaf on large cantilevers that thermally bridged inside to out. The brief was to repair, renew and spatially reinvigorate the house for its new owners without comprising the integrity of the original architecture.

The house is now heated with an ASHP, walls and soffits heavily lined with insulation and with replacement double-glazed oak windows that faithfully match the fenestration of the existing house. An approach that minimises heat loss and energy consumption and creates a sustainable and healthy home.

The dining space is twice as tall as it is wide and features a new cherry-clad coffered arched ceiling. The mirrored linings on the adjacent angled wall expand the sense of the space and provide an awesome geometric form with daylight and tree canopies reflected back into the room below.
