Carved painted polaroid. I wore my paulnache shirt to the Guggenheim and captured it in the brass plaque for the elevator. This had a floorplan for the building and it caught my reflection of not taking a polaroid.
Darian Leader made a remarkable point about drive in a recent interview with Derek Hook. He pointed out it is not when the baby is feeding at the breast but when their hand is reaching and manipulating another object whilst feeding. This is the registering of not enough that occurs across zones. Ambivalence accompanies us, drive is thus singular in our ability to not be singular. Interesting what comes out of the practice of pushing things together. Pictorial space is a relatively new concept, one we have embraced with furious abandon. The resemblance of our scrolling to the rosary is not nothing. Practice precedes belief, to theorise the gaze is to always keep in mind its revelation is of our lack of mastery. When we 'add to our story' we must not be fooled that we are adding anything but more anxiety. #painting #nzart #space #depiction #words by @hayward.g

It's curious to spend the better part of a year making a thing. Only ever seeing it in fragments. Then to assemble it for five days of Sydney Contemporary talk to hundreds of people over that time. Have it seen by thousands and then pack it up and head back to the studio in Whanganui Aotearoa. The contrast between partial yet meaningful conversation with many people to still always partial yet meaningful conversation with a few people is startling. It's the last day of Sydney Contemporary and I feel humbled and appreciative of the time and energy people spend engaging with me and the work. #thelastsupper #painting #carving #security #nzartist by @hayward.g
