Theatre of Tarot: Major Arcana
Card No. 17 : “𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓢𝓽𝓪𝓻”

All the elements of this image are assembled by hand. Some artists choose to work with AI, and that is their free choice. But personally I am in agreement with the film director Guillermo del Toro @gdtreal on this subject, as an artist nothing beats the sensual joy of working in a tactile way! I find it gives my imagination the most amount of freedom of expression, a poem needs mediation and understanding through the senses.

This card carries the energy of, “the darkest hour is before the dawn”, or the “light at the end of the tunnel”. The Star symbolises inspiration, ideal love, truth revealed, visionary progress and hope. The embodiment of the star is linked to the astrological sign of Aquarius the water carrier. Like Venus, the star is a luminous celestial visible to our eyes, echoing the brightness of Aurora goddess of the dawn in the Roman tradition, or Arianrhod in Celtic mythology. As we enter the time of advent, the symbol of the star also resonates with the story of the three Magi following the star in the Nativity tale.

In the ancient world, observing the celestial bodies and the constellations enabled humans to understand divine orders and patterns of correspondence and connection in the Universe. Incandescent and casting a beam of light and optimism, the star card in the tarot represents archetypal inspiration and innovation. The Greeks called her Elphis, the last creature inside Pandora’s box. In dark times, even when things are difficult, the star helps us to persevere and look for resilience in the face of adversity.

Theatre of Tarot: Major Arcana
Card No. 21 : “𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓦𝓸𝓻𝓵𝓭”

The World card is the alpha and the omega of the tarot. It is the concatenation of disparate elements into a unified whole. It symbolically contains all the other arcana in it’s synthesis. It is simultaneously the triumph of reaching the destination and a new terrain yet to be discovered. The Fool embarked on a journey, travelled through an alchemical journey of transformation, and reached achievement and completion of a cycle. Having persisted through each stage of the arcana, this archetype finally arrives at celebration and attainment, acknowledging connection of the inner to the outer, the individual to the collective. Like the ouroboros, the bridge between the realms, The World elegantly weaves opposing forces into a bind of integrated balance.

“Áine Listens to the Language of the Birds”

My painting takes inspiration from the mythical world of the Tír na nÓg. Tír na nÓg has been interpreted by some as a psychic landscape or a manifestation of the subconscious and the collective unconscious. This Celtic Otherworld is inhabited by the goddess and shapeshifter Áine. In Irish Celtic folklore and mythology she is queen of the faeries, a protector of crops and plants, guardian of the animal kingdom and is representative of the earth itself.

A “bright” figure of sovereignty, she is linked to the sun and the moon. She is associated with fertility, the health and vitality of the land. One of her symbols is that of the red mare, known as the ‘Lair Derg’. This sacred animal connects her power to the vibrant energy of the summer sun, and represents her as a force of wildness, vivacity and freedom. In this dreamscape time flows slowly like an endless river.

In the mythology violence is committed against her by Ailill Aulom. Áine’s myth emphasizes that true power comes from reciprocal relationship with the earth, not from forced domination. Áine is also emblematic a return to the “mythic wise”, or as the late Manchan Magan described it, to an “infinity of wisdom and wonder”.

I take a look at ritual, performance, ecology, mythology, and folklore, in the wonderful world of @theatreoftheancients. Using recycled cardboard, paper mache and hessian @theatreoftheancients makes puppets and props to offer storytelling rituals in Ibiza.

Can a machine dream? Can a machine write a poem felt through it’s senses?

A poem is an experience beyond thought, it is the stirrings within the senses and the soul to accept the mystery. A living poem will always embrace uncertainty, it will sit with the sensation of the unfathomable, the open ended. When we dive into the lake of poetry, our pleasure is to luxuriate in the water, the point is not to immediately rush to the shore.

On waking I tried to gather the fading memory of a dream, dissolving partially - the fragments of visual poetry unfurled themselves to the warmth of the sun. Then they melted into a lake of symbols from which they were reborn. Floating on the current between the chthonic and the celestial, they looked upwards at the eternal mirrored in the infinite stars of the night.

🌱Excited to share news of an ONLINE EVENING CLASS (GMT) OPEN TO EVERYBODY, I will be giving with the @collegeofpsychicstudies in a few months time. I am offering a visual journey called “EARTH MAGIC IN ESOTERIC ART”. This talk will examine the theme of a sacred ecological perspective from ancient art to the modern day.

From ancient petroglyphs, geoglyphs and pictographs, I will start to unearth the history of ancient stone art in indigenous folkloric cultures. I will be delving into a treasure trove of examples from anonymous craftsmen, Minnie Evans, Ithell Colquhoun, Cecil Collins, Anne Brigman, Vali Myers, Monica Sjoo, Ana Mendieta, (to name a few). I will also touch on the continued tradition of ritual and earth based consciousness in contemporary art.
