The
Suburbs
/

Located on one of the last remaining vacant plots within a low-density urban development in a municipality near Bilbao, on a rectangular plot surrounded by single-family homes of varying shapes and styles, the planned single-family home is heavily influenced by the specific physical and urban characteristics of its location. A large and unremarkable neighborhood of single-family homes forms the densely populated urban environment in which it is situated, an area lacking harmony and quality, composed of units devoid of distinctive features that are further exacerbated by the limited space available for the project.

Similarly, the economic factors linked to the project, the need to address it from a budgetary standpoint, also greatly condition it, making it necessary to respond to the programmatic demands in a direct and simple way, without artifice, with the least possible consumption of surface area and resources, but maintaining the high environmental quality in the habitable spaces and the high construction standards, energy performance and sustainability demanded by its future inhabitants.

The program is resolved through a volume conditioned by its surroundings, to the point of being forced to adopt a certain attitude of denial, of autonomy, but which at the same time shows a will to relate to the architectonical typologies that define the territory in which it is located. In this sense, a volumetry linked to vernacular tradition is adopted, through its gabled roof, more akin to a shed or stable than to a Basque farmhouse -baserri- or the usual reinterpretations in the form of pastiche than abound in Basque suburbs. This approach is insufficient to alleviate the problems of the suburb in which it is located, but at least it helps to avoid exacerbating them.

Christina’s
World

Located in a transition zone between the old urban fabric of Orozko, almost rural in character in the area running parallel to the Altube River on the eastern side of the plot, and the new urban developments, abruptly interrupted on the western boundaries, the intervention for the construction of a two family house and its annexes has sought from the outset, as a fundamental premise, to generate an appropriate response to its surroundings, acting as a fitting culmination and consolidating the small, low-density urban nucleus of single family houses and their annexes, surrounded by private plots. The area is characterized by rural houses and farmhouses with adjacent properties bordered by stone walls and outbuildings without interruption, and it is this characteristic of the area that the project takes advantage of in order to resolve the second starting premise: to generate a high-quality protected environment within the main center of a municipality like Orozko, a kind of own private world. To achieve this, the house is moved from its standard location —according to the urban planning— in the center of a private garden to its edge, like a fence or walled enclosure surrounding a new courtyard, a new interior world. The initial project envisioned constructing this exterior wall in stone masonry to further enhance its integration into the surroundings, a plan that had to be abandoned later due to economic constraints.

Like the world of Christina that Andrew Wyeth immortalized in his famous painting, the reinvention of the rules of the game for this project, not without difficulties in its long development, has finally allowed the creation of a protected and beautiful space, a hidden garden that grows and will grow with care in the years to come, for the inhabitants of this patio and its visitors.

Diving
Into the
Wreck
/
h

The transformation of the old Oxinburu building is the story of a wreck, or rather, the act of diving into a wreck to try to salvage what could be recovered, not only from the building that existed previously but also from a project that seemed to sink with it. And to re-emerge from it, several years later, inevitably changed. No one returns unscathed from a wreck, neither a building, nor a project, nor a group of architects. Like Adrienne Rich in her poem, very much in our minds as we began the work into which we immersed ourselves with very limited resources, we descended into the depths of an ocean of myths to explore the remains of a wreck, with all its decay and all its beauty.

The project was plagued almost from the outset by uncertainties and difficulties of all kinds, among which the financial ones were clearly not the least. With a contractor intent on the progressive dismantling of the original plan, it became for the architects a process of relentless defense, of trial and error, of constant redesign, of begging for possible alternatives, of imploring solutions to try to emerge from the wreck, if not unscathed, at least alive. Like Rich, we gradually shed all the stories surrounding the wreck, all the superfluous elements of the project, until we were left only with the essential, only with the bones, which had even been severely altered. We explored the remains of what we had been, in a physical sense, in the building and in the memory we sought to rescue; and in a figurative sense, analyzing the remnants of a project to salvage what was essential to it. We salvaged what could help us rebuild a new Oxinburu, where the people of Arrankudiaga could access a space for culture and community life, rooted in the memory of local stories and myths, centered on the presence of the building’s remains, but focused on its future as a tool for vital and cultural cohesion. Whether we have succeeded or not, our perception varies from day to day; for now, we have only glimpsed it inhabited, but that brief glimpse has ignited hope within us.

Although in this first phase it has not been possible to fully complete it, the intervention to transform SAPA arm’s factory into a space for people and life, demonstrates the relevance of reusing our built heritage, considering everything that exists as an asset, a factual value. Despite the difficulties and the hard work involved in its transformation, especially to convince all the agents involved in the management of our urban environment, it is necessary to consider all the existing situations as heritage, and reuse them, reveal them, enrich them, transform them, repair them and protect them in certain cases. This approach to heritage through what exists touches on the fundamental idea of heritage as a lived space. Its repair, its transformation and the possibility of its metamorphosis therefore occur with respect to this lived condition. In addition to economic and ecological issues, the social issue is decisive.

How ought such a natural history of destruction to begin? With a summary of the technical, organizational, and political prerequisites for carrying out large-scale air raids? With a scientific account of the previously unknown phenomenon of the firestorms? With a pathographical record of typical modes of death, or with behaviorist studies of the instincts of flight and homecoming?

...
the thing I came for:
the wreck and not the story of the wreck
the thing itself and not the myth
the drowned face always staring
toward the sun
the evidence of damage
worn by salt and sway into this threadbare beauty
the ribs of the disaster
curving their assertion
among the tentative haunters.

A pavilion for the Basque Country International Architecture Biennial Mugak/ @mugakbienal

The system is used for the construction of a pavilion at the Basque Country International Architecture Biennial Mugak / Fronteras Boundaries in its fourth edition. The versatility of the H A B I T [+] Modular system allows its use in this case to build a multipurpose pavilion linked to the activities of the Mugak Biennial, talks, conferences, and workshops. Furthermore, the pavilion forms an exhibition and informative space that serves as a showcase for the H A B I T [+] modular transformation system itself and the [ i n ] H A B I T strategy, especially when reproduced by means of a full-scale mock-up or prototype. The pavilion becomes the physical materialization of the Biennale's own motto “rebuild, reinhabit, rethink”. A tool that invites us to rethink the way we inhabit and re-inhabit our “old” quarters, which invites us to consider the reconstruction of our most vulnerable neighbourhoods from the perspective of respect and the enhancement of the buildings that make them up.

The pavilion invites us to inhabit the frontier of this time of transition by raising the appropriate premises to rethink the necessary change and providing us with the tools to rebuild and transform our reality and re-inhabit our time.

Like the era that we have had to live through and like this humanity that is tried to be presented to us in ruins, but which, in the words of anthropologist Marc Augé, is actually under construction, Mugak/HABIT[atu]Z is a pavilion under construction. Something that gains more value as it is a pavilion for an architecture biennial. As Augé said, we would like for it to have the beauty of what it could have been. Of what is not yet. Of what one day, perhaps, will take place.
