For Shakaria, that can mean successfully filling a referral for counseling, helping someone access transportation services, or simply making sure the right person gets connected to the right community resource.

Because access matters. A service can exist, but if someone can’t find it, reach it, or navigate the process to receive it, there’s still work to do.

At HCES, those connections are part of the work behind the work—and every connection can make a difference for an individual, a family, and ultimately, a community.

Hispanic Heritage Month is more than a celebration of culture—it’s an opportunity to recognize the people whose leadership has helped shape healthier, stronger communities. 💙

This month, HCES is highlighting three Hispanic leaders whose impact reaches across public health, behavioral health, healthcare access, health equity, and community service: Dr. Antonia Novello, Belisa Urbina, and Dr. José Celso Barbosa.

Their work spans different generations and different areas of service, but shares an important thread: using leadership to make care, resources, and opportunity more accessible to the communities they serve.

Representation matters. Leadership matters. And so does recognizing the people who helped move our systems forward.

Care-coordination-maxxing. 🤝💙

Because sometimes the work isn’t just providing a service — it’s making sure all the pieces actually connect.

For HCES, that has looked like expanding school-based behavioral health support so more students can access care where they already are, helping families navigate community resources like 211, coordinating providers and client services, identifying barriers like transportation, and making sure people don’t get lost somewhere between “help exists” and “help received.”

A lot of the most important work happens in that middle space:

the follow-up.
the referral.
the phone call.
the handoff.
the coordination.
the person asking, “Okay, but what happens next?”

That’s care coordination — and yes, we’re maxxing it. 😂

Because better outcomes don’t come from having more resources alone. They come from making sure the right people can actually reach them.

Somebody has to think about the people who get left out of the plan.

The parent who can’t take off work.
The patient without reliable transportation.
The child who needs behavioral health support but doesn’t know where to start.
The older adult managing care alone.
The family that technically has resources available—but no realistic way to reach them.

That’s the difference between designing a service and designing access.

At HCES, we believe strong systems have to account for real life: transportation, cost, time, trust, language, family responsibilities, provider availability, and all of the other barriers that can determine whether support actually reaches the person it was created for.

Because a plan isn’t truly effective if it only works for the people who have the easiest path to it.

Public health means asking a harder question:

Who are we still missing—and what would it take to bring them in?

When a family needs support, one of the hardest questions can simply be: Where do we even start?

Precious Maxwell, Client Service Manager at HCES, shares one resource our team regularly points families toward: 211, United Way’s Helpline.

211 helps connect people with local community resources for needs including mental health and counseling services, food assistance, housing support, healthcare resources, transportation, utility assistance, family services and more.

And that matters because sometimes the resource you need already exists—you just need help finding it.

At HCES, part of supporting children and families means helping bridge the gap between needing care and knowing how to access it.

Preparedness matters before the emergency.

Only about 1 in 5 U.S. households has a written evacuation plan—which means many families may be forced to make critical decisions in real time, under stress, when every minute matters.

A strong emergency plan doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with the basics:

📍 Know where your household would meet
📞 Choose an emergency contact
💊 Keep medications and important documents accessible
🎒 Build a basic emergency kit
🚗 Know your evacuation route
🐾 Include pets, children, older adults, and anyone with additional support needs

Preparedness is personal, but it also impacts the larger system. When more households are ready, communities are better able to respond—and hospitals, emergency responders, and public health systems are under less strain during disasters.

This National Preparedness Month, take a few minutes to ask:

If your household had to leave quickly, would everyone know what to do?

Let’s talk: What would make mental health support easier to reach in your community?

Suicide prevention is not just about what happens in a crisis. It’s also about what happens before someone gets there.

A check-in.
A trusted person noticing a change.
Access to behavioral health care.
A provider with availability.
A crisis line someone knows how to use.
Continued support after the hardest moment passes.

One measles case can activate an entire public health response.

What the public sees is a confirmed case. What happens behind the scenes is much bigger.

Public health teams may begin tracing contacts, identifying possible exposure locations, notifying families and providers, monitoring for new symptoms, coordinating testing, and working to prevent one case from becoming many more.

And that work is especially urgent with measles because the virus is highly contagious and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a space.

Georgia’s situation has also changed quickly. The state reported 7 cases on August 18; by August 28, that number had risen to 11 confirmed cases, including four cases connected to a metro Atlanta daycare setting.

That’s why surveillance, reporting, contact tracing, provider coordination, and prevention matter.

At HCES, we believe some of the most important public health work is the work you never see—the coordination happening quietly in the background to protect an entire community.

If you develop possible measles symptoms, Georgia DPH advises calling your healthcare provider before going to a clinic, hospital, or doctor’s office so precautions can be taken.

Public health doesn’t wait for a situation to become a bigger headline. It works to stop it from becoming one.

We’re excited to share that HCES is expanding our school-based behavioral health work into another school community.

More than 2 in 3 overdose deaths had at least one potential opportunity for intervention.

That statistic matters because overdose prevention isn’t only about what happens in the final moments of a crisis. It’s also about what happens before.

Earlier access to behavioral health care.
Substance use treatment.
Naloxone.
Support from family and community.
A provider who recognizes the warning signs.
A system that makes it easier to ask for help.

Every point of connection can become an opportunity to intervene sooner.

Sometimes getting a child the support they need means changing where and how that support shows up. 💙

Meet Brittany Jackson, one of our Client Services Managers at HCES. Brittany helps oversee the professionals providing mental and behavioral health services through our community partnerships—and one of the wins she’s especially proud of is expanding support for students across Georgia.

Through our work with school systems, students can receive additional services in environments where they feel comfortable enough to talk openly about grief, challenges at home, classroom experiences, mental health, and the things they may not know how to navigate alone.

Because access to behavioral healthcare isn’t simply about having a provider available.

It’s also about creating the conditions where a young person feels safe enough to use that support.

That’s the work behind the work: coordinating people, partnerships, and services so families don’t just hear that resources exist—they can actually experience the care behind them.

And for Brittany, that’s something worth being proud of. 💙
