I offered to go with a relative to post newsletters through doors. Then, I became fascinated by all the ornate letterboxes and didn't help save any time at all. 🫢

花霞 — HANAGASUMI

A half-remembered moment from the Cherry Blossom Festival at Brindleyplace, Birmingham, back in spring. 🌸

I wanted to capture that fleeting, ethereal feeling of being surrounded by blossom, movement and people where everything becomes blurred together. This is a fusion of in-camera #multipleexposure with the people, combined with #ICM through the cherry blossoms. I am new to ICM photography so this is an experimental process — imperfect, unpredictable, and figuring out what this way of seeing could become.
Still experimenting. Still learning. Still letting go. 🤍

▪︎ WHERE THE WIND DREAMS ▪︎

Last weekend, I revisited Avoncroft Museum, home to a collection of historic buildings and structures rescued from across the West Midlands. I hadn’t been since I was a child but I remembered exactly where to find this wonderful #windmill dating from around 1820, rescued from Warwickshire. A post mill, its entire body can be rotated to face the wind.

As it was Heritage Open Day, the museum was bustling with visitors — somewhat inconvenient for wide, empty shots! But the romantic sweep of the sails and that quirky cat-and-mouse weather vane were calling out to me. From beneath an old oak tree, this was the result.

▪︎ FERNLIGHT ▪︎

As the seasons change, there's something lovely about letting the light become gentler and the foliage take centre stage - opening the lens to some mystery #botanicalphotography #ferns #multipleexposure

▪︎ NEON REVERIE ▪︎

As an extraordinary summer draws to an end, I'm left with a fairground ride spinning somewhere between reality and a fever dream. Taken on an impossibly hot day when everything seemed to luminesce, somehow the moon has wandered into the memory too. #multipleexposure #fairground #dreams

▪︎ SUSPENDED ▪︎

'Suspended' brings together two different moments from this spring: a seagull in Aberystwyth and waves from a @sheclicksnet and @janina_wildeacademy workshop on the Jurassic Coast. Living in the Midlands, I don't get enough opportunities to stand beside the sea with a camera.

For me, 'Suspended' is about the tension between stillness and turbulence; finding composure within a vast, strange and restless world. The gull appears remarkably self-contained against all the movement. At the same time, the boundaries between the elements around it become difficult to distinguish. The ocean, spray and sky seem to merge into one another. I'm increasingly drawn to minimalism and surrealism and in this image, that feels like an exercise in restraint.

I'm sharing the individual layers alongside the finished image. For this fusion, I turned the wave layer upside down. That shift changed the feeling; it became less about the sea itself and more about the atmosphere. This colour palette is one of my favourites and the beak might just be the detail I love most. #surrealism #multipleexposure #seagull

▪︎ PASSING COMPANIONS ▪︎

One of the things I love most about multiple exposure is its surrealist quality, allowing me to play with boundaries between elements that would never normally share the same space. Here, I wanted to bring interior and exterior together, using light as the link between the two.

One morning last week, the early light was casting the shadow of my blinds across the wall. Rather than using light shafts in their more traditional form, they offered me an opportunity to experiment with framing, having been inspired by the Fused Fridays community.

I captured the underlying silhouette in March during a @sheclicksnet and @janina_wildeacademy workshop on the Jurassic Coast. This little dog was enthusiastically leading its owners to Seaton beach! The photo had been lingering in my archive because I had positioned the figures more centrally than I would have liked. By offsetting them within the window of light and shadow, I have hopefully been able to reinterpret that mistake and find a new balance! #silhouette #framing #surrealism

▪︎ SUNFIRE ▪︎

Inspired by the work of several #fusedfridays community members last week (notably @susana.sees.art and @practicingeverydaydelights ) I wanted to create a fusion portraying the heatwaves we’ve experienced this summer. I've enjoyed the heat but I have felt more edgy as, in the words of the PM, Britain has become a tinderbox. I live close to Stourbridge, which is one of the places where a large wildfire (cause not yet determined) has caused destruction and injuries. On Wednesday, it was World Photography Day and I went to a sunflower field which is usually brimming with a spectacular maze of tall flowers. This year, they were sparse and half-dead which forced me to photograph them with a different vision!

I’m cautious of reproducing the layers for this fusion on their own in case that breaches any copyright terms. However, I have drawn the colours and textures (5 layers) from craft materials, street art and bokeh. Using Exclusion for one of the layers, I found I could transform the head of the sunflower into the face of the blazing sun. #sunflower #heatwave

This summer has brought many opportunities to explore botanical photography, none more so than my trip to Birmingham Botanical Gardens as part of the @sheclicksnet 8th anniversary Big Meet-Ups. I love how photography sparks my curiosity about the natural world. This is a Persian Silk Tree which is nurtured by the Gardens as a wonderful ornamental canopy. In Iranian culture, it's evocatively known as the Night Sleeper due to its drooped appearance when the fern-like leaves fold together as the sun goes down, seeming to wake again when it rises. Like me, it enjoys sunshine and warmth and it has thrived during the unprecedented, prolonged heat in the UK (although we need a good dose of rain soon)! I’ve added several ICM and out-of-focus layers of the tree to hopefully create a dreamlike haziness, capturing how I will remember this summer. #persiansilktree #treestagram

The 7th Floor 'Secret Garden' of Birmingham Central Library has wonderful views over my home city. At first glance, these residential tower blocks are architectural blights on the landscape, only worth photographing due to how aesthetically unattractive they are. However, the more I studied them through my lens, the more I noticed the hidden beauty within their geometry. Lured to middle-England by the abundance of discarded chips, seagulls swirl around the buildings, interrupting the rigid order of urban monotony. They are gifted with the stuff of our aspirations. But, free to fly wherever they wish, they choose the concrete grid. #urbanarchitecture #birminghamphotography #seagull

For this week's fusion, I went to some lavender fields which were swimming with bees and for once, I remembered my close-up filters. I don't often shoot close-up so it took some practice (and patience) to get a few photos with the bee still in the frame, let alone in focus! #beesofinstagram #multipleexposure #lavender
