Low Season is excited to share our Fall 2024 visiting critic, Heather Bhandari! Heather (she/her) is known for her work as a curator, writer, educator, and artist advocate. Prior to joining @foundationforcontemporaryarts as Program Director, she co-founded @creativestudysocial , a business and financial health education platform for creatives. She is a trustee of @art_omi , a visiting critic at @risd1877 , and an adjunct lecturer at @brownu . She is co-author of ART/WORK (Simon & Schuster, 2017), which will appear in its 26th printing this fall. From 2000 to 2016 @hdb917 was a director of Mixed Greens gallery where she curated over 100 exhibitions and managed a roster of two-dozen emerging to mid-career artists. Subsequently, she was the Director of Exhibitions at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn and a lead organizer of Forward Union. Her career began at Sonnabend and Lehmann Maupin galleries. She holds a BA from Brown University and an MFA from Pennsylvania State University. A key component of our Low Season mission is providing professional opportunities for artists. Through studio visits, critical feedback, and networking opportunities, we seek to help artists further their practice and develop a network of Low Season artists. We’re grateful to Heather for her support of our program! 💛 📸 @cokewisdom2 by @hdb917

I’m back! After a year-long hiatus from IG, I think I finally have news worth posting. I’m proud to join the Foundation for Contemporary Arts as their new program director. It’s exciting to be in a position to support artists’ work in a new way. The first two images are from the foundation website. The third is *not* a grantee project. It *is* a view from my walk to work. by @hdb917
Repost from @creativestudysocial • 📣📣📣FREE, LIVE Q&A: Solidarity Economy Practices: Timebanking with Mike Strode of the Kola Nut Collaborative. ✨ Tuesday, September 26, 2023 | 6-7pm ET. RSVP today via link in bio. Join Mike Strode, Founding Coordinator of the Kola Nut Collaborative (@kolanutcollab), for a live Q&A on Timeanking, a Solidarity Economy practice of identifying, celebrating, and trading time as a valued resource. 👉🏽👉🏽👉🏽The Solidarity Economy is recognized internationally as a way to value people and the planet over profits and to unite grassroots practices of cooperative work. Most neighborhoods contain examples of the Solidarity Economy. In fact, you might already practice solidarity work – say, when you and your neighbors form a clothing swap or a lending library – without ever giving it that name. In the Timebanking module on CreativeStudy, we discuss the non-monetary exchange of time, a precious resource, in communities of color and beyond and encourage viewers to get involved. During this Q&A, Mike Strode will tell us more about the Chicago-based Kola Nut Collaborative and how they operate a time-based service- and skills-trading platform, otherwise known as a Timebank. He’ll be able to answer questions about how it got its start, the successes and challenges of running such a platform, how you might get involved in what they are doing, and how you might start a Timebank in your community. If you are already in a Timebank, this is a great opportunity to connect with others. ~~~ #CreativeStudy #ArtCoop #solidarityeconomy #creativestudy #artcoop #obviousagency #solidarityeconomy #creativesolidarity #professionalpracticeforartists #financialhealtheducation #financialhealthforcreatives #creativesustainability #entrepreneurialcreatives #creativeempowerment #creativework #thefuturewewant #anotherworldispossible #studyintoaction by @hdb917

What I did with my summer Part 1! Two new courses with our friends @art.coop! Lights, camera, #studyintoaction 🎬 Creatives around the world are working together, placing people and the planet over profit to create thriving studios, businesses, investments, and creative work. You can too. “𝐍𝐨 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐭! 𝐍𝐨𝐧-𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐚𝐧𝐬” It’s hard to believe that teenagers are allowed (even encouraged!) to take out hundreds of thousands of dollars in student debt, but it’s nearly impossible for creatives to get ethical loans. In this course, Boston Ujima Project discusses racist and often predatory lending practices in the U.S. and introduces non-extractive funds, an important piece of the Solidarity Economy movement because they place people and the planet over profit. “𝐍𝐨 𝐁𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬! 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬” To get creative projects done, many artists and creative workers instinctively pool resources and labor. They share risk, profits, recognition, and opportunities. Though many do this work without giving it a name, others formalize their intuitive, values-driven, people-centered structures into cooperative business (co-ops). In this course, worker-owned, performance-based cooperative Obvious Agency (Joseph Ahmed, Arianna Gass, Daniel Park, and Cat Ramirez) introduce us to their work and the motivation and structure required of a co-op. MONDAY May 8, 2023, 5-6pm ET!! RSVP for “Protecting Your Storytelling Power: Strategies For Black Artists” with Amani Olu, Founder of Olu & Company, moderated by @dexterwimberly, based on his free course on CreativeStudy.com Find out more and RSVP via 🔗 link in @creativestudysocial bio! Come with your questions. Join Amani Olu, the founder of Olu & Company for this live Q&A on Protecting Your Storytelling Power: Strategies For Black Artists. More than ever, contemporary art galleries, museums, and other cultural venues are rushing to associate themselves with the work of Black artists. While taking a step in the right direction, these institutions—primarily led by white individuals—do not always have the patience, language, and lived experience to contextualize the work as intended. As a result, many Black artists find that the people representing them often misrepresent or silence their ideas to move a sale forward, placate leadership, or make the viewing experience comfortable for white audiences. The “Protecting Your Storytelling Power: Strategies For Black Artists” courses on CreativeStudy.com were made possible with support from Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) @AICADfellowship / olucompany.com / @amaniolu / @olucompany / @humbleartsfoundation by @hdb917
Over the last year, I’ve had the extreme pleasure of working with Ruby Lerner on her archive, which launches today! Rubylerner.com Ruby is a fierce, feisty, and fearless advocate for the arts, for artist empowerment, for equity, for structural change. She believes artists are not only integral to a life worth living, but they are key to our very survival. Me too! I thank Ruby for helping to pave the way for my work and the work of many others and for taking me on this journey! Read her archive of writing and speeches and you will be shocked by how prescient it is. (Spoiler alert: she’s been sounding the alarm since to early 80s!) ….
