On March 7th, we gathered a convoy of six cars at the far west end of the Liwa desert. We set the camp and enjoyed the sunset.

Early the next day, we embarked on the crossing. The terrain mixes high dunes with powder sand, riddled with ditches and sand bowls hidden by the sun’s reflections. What makes this place unique are the sabkhas and their formation across the area. Sabkhas are flat, featureless plains with a surface covered in a layer of salt crusts.

A small mistake, combined with unforgiving terrain, destroyed one of our cars’ 4WD. We spread out to scout the area for the easiest exit but finally decided to complete the crossing, towing the disabled car over the obstacles.

That night, we were blessed by one of nature’s wonders, a lunar halo, also known as a moon ring. Experiencing this phenomenon for the first time, I had an eerie feeling of being abducted by aliens.
The final day was long, the weather was hot, and we were full of mood swings. We second-guessed our decisions and brainstormed options while conquering obstacles.

When the sun started to set, we passed the last obstacle and reached the catch road that led us to the main road. While inflating our tires, we had smiles on our faces and memories that would be cherished.

Liwa cannot be missed. It always brings memorable adventures. Mesmerising landscapes full of surprises and unforgiving traps make this place one-of-a-kind.

Combined with an amazing group of people, determined and focused on crossing Liwa during the day and hedonistically chilling in the evenings, I will keep this memory forever!
