Can music be counted as health data?

One of our Take the Lead projects, Data in Harmony, explored health and wellbeing in older adults through music, movement and journaling.

Led by Trish Vella-Burrows, founder of Music4Wellbeing, the project found that group singing consistently supported wellbeing, with participants linking it to improved mood, confidence, social connection and a greater sense of purpose.

Find out more about the project in our visuals, created by Shalom Vic-Jumbo - @simeevlogs

Follow along as we spotlight more Take the Lead projects and discover how communities are putting people at the heart of health data.

Our Black Internship Programme Opening Ceremony marked the beginning of another exciting summer, bringing together this year’s interns, alumni, hosts and partners to kick off what promises to be an incredible eight weeks.

From inspiring opening remarks by Raqiya Ali from our 2025 cohort, to an engaging fireside chat with Ade Williams and Karen Ambrose, the day was filled with insightful conversations, practical workshops and opportunities to build new connections.

We also had Fatemeh Torabi introduce this year’s Technical Challenge, workshops with Sandra Mighty and Ronke Lawal, and a hugely competitive marshmallow tower challenge! The brilliant day ended with closing reflections from Martin Levermore, Chair of the Black Internship Advisory Board.

We wish this year’s interns the best of luck and can’t wait to see what they’ll achieve!

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success, including our HDR UK colleagues, alumni volunteers, speakers and facilitators. And special thanks to photographer, Marlene Landu, for capturing so many special moments!

🆕 New research!

Obesity inequalities in England have widened since COVID-19, with steepest increases in new cases in young adults.

This new study from researchers at @cambridgeuniversity, @the_bhf Data Science Centre, and @georgeinstitute found that obesity affected nearly a third of adults in England in 2025. Disadvantaged groups carry a disproportionate burden of the obesity crisis, and this gap has widened since the COVID-19 pandemic.

🗝️ What were the key findings of this research?

➡️ Obesity is rising: rates of new cases increased by 4% overall in 2025 compared with pre-pandemic

➡️ Young adults hit hardest: rates of new obesity cases rose almost 20% in people aged 30-39, and by 16% in those aged 20-29

➡️ Risk rises with deprivation: rates of obesity cases were 35% higher for people with the highest socioeconomic deprivation

➡️ Ethnicity and deprivation compound: obesity affected 66% among the most socioeconomically deprived Black women aged 60-69 - nearly double the figure for the least-deprived White women of the same age

➡️ Large geographical differences: 48% of people in some areas of northeast England were affected by obesity - nearly six times that of the most affluent parts of central London.

A few months ago, SAF was able to host free football sessions for girls aged 5–11 with the support of HDR through their ‘Take the Lead’ programme. The sessions focused on girls’ football, helping participants develop skills, improve fitness and build confidence both on and off the pitch. Throughout the project, it was amazing to see the girls grow in confidence, make new friends and share so many smiles along the way. ⚽💙

A huge thank you to the HDR grant ‘Take the Lead’, which allowed SAF to deliver these sessions and create more opportunities for girls to get involved in football. We can’t wait to build on this success!

A thank you to @francescaljones_ as well for the wonderful photos and attending one of our sessions to see the great work SAF does!

Throwback to our London intern meet-up, which was held in @sevendialsmkt a couple of weeks ago. ☀️

The weather was hot and the iced tea was flowing but most importantly, intern Ini brought along the best fan to get us through! 🪭

Lots of new connections were made, we discussed the science of afro hair and we also learned... Emmanuel knows everybody!

Last up on our intern meet tour is Newcastle, in collaboration with Northern Health Futures (NortHFutures) Hub.
