The “Can you afford to pay attention” exhibition provided an unforgettable and immersive experience for our audience by placing them in a completely dark environment.

Here is a video capturing the unique and memorable journey through the theatrical world of art and Neuroaesthetics.

Through a curated selection of artworks and interactive displays, visitors explored how attention shapes their perception and experience of art. This unconventional showcase redefined the narrative of art by seamlessly integrating neuroaesthetic insights from the laboratory into the artistic experience.

Operating under the “spotlight theory of attention,” where our brain focuses intensely on specific stimuli, the dark environment amplified this effect by eliminating distracting factors within the space. As a result, the audience becomes highly engaged with each individual work.

This setting also heightened visitors other senses since visual sense is restricted in the dark; meanwhile, the dark environment can boost up our creativity by putting our brain into an “explorative mode”.

In this completely dark environment, the experience of art transcended traditional boundaries, opening up new levels of sensory and cognitive engagement.

About our Founder

Mu Qing is an independent curator whose practice sits at the intersection of Neuroaesthetics, Neuroscience, and Art. Her research explores the intricate relationship between the brain's responses to art and the impact of such interactions on mood and cognitive activity.

Through her work, she integrates neuroaesthetic research findings into her curatorial storytelling. By doing so, she aspires to unlock fresh perspectives for the audience to experience art and redefine what art exhibitions could be.

Meanwhile, as an artist and a long-term meditator, she is interested in unveiling the therapeutic attributes of art and empowering her audience through the engagement with art.

She founded the curatorial lab – Heart Lab – in London in 2023, with the belief that "ART beats in every heART."

With her interdisciplinary approach, Mu Qing continues to innovate and inspire by demonstrating how the intersection of science and art can create meaningful and transformative experiences.

Welcome to heart lab!

Heart Lab was founded by Mu Qing in 2023 with the belief that “ART beats in every heART.”

With our expertise in neuroaesthetics, we strive to use the power of neuroscience and aesthetic science to create new narratives in the story of art.

Our primary approach is to integrate neuro-aesthetic research findings into our curatorial storytelling. By doing so, we aspire to unlock fresh perspectives for the public to experience art and redefine what art exhibitions could be.

With such interdisciplinary approach, we continue to innovate and inspire by demonstrating how the intersection of science and art can create meaningful and transformative experiences.

Join us for a new journey of art? 😏

Congratulations to Turkish artist Mr. Ahmet Güneştekin’s @ahmetgunestekin grand opening of the Güneştekin Foundation @gunestekin @fondazionegunestekin in Venice and the powerful launch of his solo exhibition “Silence” (Sessizlik / Silenzio / Silence) at the historic Palazzo Gradenigo! What an extraordinary milestone!

Bringing his visionary work and this beautiful new cultural space to the heart of Venice is truly inspiring. A perfect dialogue between contemporary art, memory, and the city’s rich history.

So excited to celebrate this beautiful achievement with the great artist! ✨

The Venice Biennale, presented as the “global grand event” of contemporary art, has on the surface long surpassed a purely Western narrative framework.

Although I still sense the implications of the “Western Gaze” in its presentation of “exotic” cultures, such as overly romanticized primitive wisdom, spectacles of political metaphor, and so forth.

A good example is the Argentina Pavilion, even though they are not the traditionally Western world, but their depiction of the eastern wisdom is very skewed.

I came from a family who has been long practicing Taoism, and I have done a 28-day Taoist fasting last year, eating nothing but water and nuts.

The very essence of Yin Yang in Taoism is that “The opposite forces complete each other, light and dark, men and women, and the two forces constantly transform into one another”

While the Argentina pavilion has presented a beautiful work, but they don’t truly understand the concept of Yin Yang.

The 61th Venice Biennale has opened its door on the 6th May to the preview audience.

The theme of this years Biennale, “In Minor Keys,” draws inspiration from music. It invites audiences to shift their attention from the “major keys” of grand narratives, and instead to listen to the “minor keys” of the subtle signals of the earth and life, the quiet frequencies of the soul, and poetic whispers.

Curated by the late Koyo Kouoh (1967–2025), the visionary Cameroonian-Swiss curator and her team.

Does the flower 🌼 truly hear the bee 🐝?

At the 15th Shanghai Biennale, I picked five works that turn the theme into a living sensory dialogue.

Allora & Calzadilla’s Phantom Forest (2025) suspends 170,000 hand-painted flowers made from recycled PVC , rootless ghosts of a threatened Caribbean forest, hovering in absence, vibrating with memory, displacement and ecological rupture. In this suspended breath, the air becomes both witness and archive.

Tania Candiani’s Prologue II: Resonant Blossoms (2025) answers with sound: bamboo-and-metal pods woven by Chinese artisans house field recordings of water, wind and forest, turning the gallery into a shared ear where listening becomes an act of generosity across species and time.

Shao Chun’s Twinland (2025) draws us inward with a surreal multimedia installation of internet footage, ASMR fragments and electronics, a cyber spirit exploring how digital culture rewrites our desires, relationships and collective memory in mixed reality.

Hu Xiaoyuan’s Ant Bone I and related works (2015–2024) weave insect wings, shells, decayed wood, hair and fossils into delicate micro-architectures, fragments of life that whisper time’s traces, where what seems vanished continues to exist in another form.

Alvaro Barrington’s Love Shack – Mountain and Sea, Shanghai (2025) creates an intimate sanctuary: a reclaimed-wood shack plays Chinese music on migration and belonging, surrounded by rhythmic Caribbean sunset paintings that reward slow, focused looking with new emotional layers.

Together, these works reawaken our neural pathways. They prove intelligence is not human alone, but a vibrating web of listening and response that art helps us rejoin.

If you have seen the exhibition, which piece shifted the way you listen?

🌸🐝 “Does the flower hear the bee?”

The 15th Shanghai Biennale was a poetic deep dive into interspecies intelligence and the more-than-human world. Inspired by recent science showing flowers actually “hear” the vibrations of bee wings and respond by producing sweeter nectar.

This fascinating phenomenon also ties into what scientists call “co-evolution”, the process where two species evolve together over generations, gradually adapting to each other’s tastes. I’ll dive deeper into this topic in my upcoming videos!

Curated by Kitty Scott @curator99 and her team, this wonderful exhibition brought together over 250 works by 67 artists and collectives around the world. It was a beautiful invitation to listen differently, attune our senses, and rethink how we connect with everything around us.
